Should McCain pick a pro-choice VP?

Michelle Malkin McCain floats a pro-choice VP trial balloon

Quote:
“And I also feel that — and I’m not trying to equivocate here — that Americans want us to work together. You know, [former Pennsylvania Governor] Tom Ridge is one of the great leaders and he happens to be pro-choice. And I don’t think that that would necessarily rule Tom Ridge out.”
Seems to me like he'll lose the vote of already weary evangelicals and ad to that many already disappointed conservatives. So should he?

Re: Should McCain pick a pro-choice VP?

He'd go from his current position which is about even* with Obama to being completely buried by himself. It would go down in history as one of the dumbest moves ever made. I would actually lose complete confidence in him as a candidate and senator because it would show how completely unaware he is if he were to do that.

*Give or take 5-10 points... I'm not going to quibble about polls over that.

I will be interesting to see who Bush has chosen to run as McCain's running mate.

McCain's base support is nowhere near strong enough for a move like that to make sense

Absolutely not. I am prochoice but I would much prefer to see us win this election than play such a dangerous game with such a volatile issue.

McCain isn't going to win any liberals, so he needs to stay pure conservative and sure up his base.

It certainly wouldn't help his cause any.

Well, McCain 2008, you'd be correct. McCain 2000, you'd be wrong. McCain 2000 was the darling of liberals on many issues. What happened over 8 years (or really just one), who knows?

As long as Obama picks a Pro-Life VP, sure, why not.

Re: Should McCain pick a pro-choice VP?

On the one hand, I'd say the obvious answer is no since the right would go bananas, but then I look back to Feb/Mar of this year to when they were going bananas over the prospect of his nomnation in the first place. They all love him now so I kind of get the feeling that their bark is worse than their bite or, at least, they have very short memories. Either way, I'm tempted to think he might take a slight dip in the polls now but by November all the flag waving bible clutchers would be back on the bandwagon.

Personally, I think he should go Romney.
