Denver officials expect to spend more than $18 million on police equipment for the Democratic National Convention — but the purchases apparently won't include high-tech weapons that use sonic waves to incapacitate protesters or goo guns to immobilize them.

Later, the city disclosed more details about its purchases, which currently are projected to come in at $18.2 million.

They will not include non-lethal weapons that use "slime" or "goo" to immobilize protesters or that use microwaves or sonic waves to induce pain or other discomfort. Some convention watchers had alleged that the city might purchase a weapon that would cause people to defecate.

Thanks for starting this thread, it should provide enough daily humor to carry us through the end of the convention.

I like the fact that the DNC wants to hide all the homeless, this quip stood out the most:

"Apparently, Democrats don’t want anybody but Hillary begging for money."

"If they don't want to get caught up in the protests or demonstrations, we'll find other activities that will keep them busy," said John Parvensky, President of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

A plan has been developed to provide interested homeless people with free access to cultural activities. They include the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and they won't have to worry about paying for transportation.

"We'll have bus tokens if they need them," Parvensky said.

Also five, big screen TVs are being donated to a teen day shelter. One hope is to engage some of the homeless children in the political process by allowing them to see convention unfold on television. But another purpose is to draw them away from the streets while the Convention is underway.

Yep, the Democrats hard at work, solving the homeless problem, looking out for the poor.

Big screen T.V.'s, bus tokens, movie tickets, zoo passes, just what the homeless need, cultural events to get them through the day.

Could the Democrats plan backfire?

However, given the opportunity to panhandle a large number of visitors to the city — and risking their strategic positions on the streets — the plan has little likelihood of success. In fact, Denver can almost certainly count on increased numbers of panhandlers during the convention in order to take advantage of the large jump in supply.

Let's hope it fails, at least for entertainment purposes.

I can see the homeless now, scalping those movie/zoo passes for less than their regular face value, and joy to the commuters who get to share a ride with the unbathed, who are on an endless air conditioned cruise through the city.

The kicker will be, is if those big screens are tuned into FNC's coverage of the convention.

That's interesting about the homeless in Denver. Here in St Paul, there's a homeless shelter a little over a block away from where the RNC is holding their convention. The Dorothy Day center has decided it's going to stay open during the convention.

To be honest, they're going to have a very difficult time as the area surrounding the convention is going to be very restricted. My office is right next door and we're getting training on how to get in and out of the area. It should be a fun week.
