Actually there has been rumor about a high profile former or present presidental candidate having a mistress and love child for over a year. There was a claim that the LA Times (or Post or whatever its called out there) was sitting on the story. I remember the usual suspects being all up in arms that it might be a republican and the liberal media was holding on the story for a more advantageous time.

It seems whenever a news story comes out that hurts 'your guys' someone from your side proudly jumps up to discredit the source. Well, even though the National Enquirer has gone back to celebrity news and gossipy stories after trying to gain a greater journalistic reputation it doesn't mean they are incapable of breaking or reporting a hard news story.

Sure, they may have stories which sometimes stretch one's imagination. But that would be like trying to discredit a story on the NBC Nightly News because the network also broadcasts Saturday Night Live or maligning the NYT because they print the Daily Horoscopes.

In this case it's probably a true story and without knowing anything more about it than you do I would wager that it is true.

And the reason why is because John Edwards is a serious figure on the national political scene and the National Enquirer is a multimillion dollar business owned by a corporation with shareholders who would not take kindly to a megamillion dollar lawsuit by the Senator well known for making his fortune by filing and trying lawsuits.

Wait and see.

It's probably a true story.

Find some actual evidence. Tabloid news is just tabloid news.

I think your view of tabloid news is much the same as someone who says that pot leads to heroin addiction. There is just enough truth in the statement for someone who knows very little about it to be of that opinion and no one ever bothers to discuss the details. And so it seems is your understanding of tabloid journalism.

In fairness to you, the Enquirer has changed it's journalistic aspirations over time so it is somewhat more difficult to nail them down; are they trying to be a serious news publication which is printed in the tabloid size and format or are they giving up their efforts and are they just going to do sensationalist news?

So, a "serious" paper like a NYT (as biased as they may be) isn't going to spend the time or resources to follow Britney around to report on her smoking in front of her young son. A tabloid will do so because that is the kind of stories their readers want.

But it's a mistake to assume that a tabloid necessarily prints stories that are untrue and inaccurate. When Carol Burnett and some other celebrity or even a few of them took these tabs to court to defend their stories and the papers lost the lawsuits it forced the owners and editors to tighten up their reportage.

And not all tabloids are alike. Some have more sensational and imaginative stories and others spend more time and money getting real reporters and photographers either on staff or as regular free lance contributors whose work is up to their standards.

I dare you to find a story that isn't true. They are subject to the same bias that any publication is but they have to make sure anything they print isn't going to cost them millions of dollars or even billions.

So, bottom line, tabloids are like pot. Fun. Relatively harmless. They give you what you want at the right price and you might make the act of partaking of them both a regular habit.

Pot users sometimes do move on to use heroin but there is nothing that makes this a common occurrence or one that is caused by pot.

Tabloids have sometimes in the past featured fantastic stories and sometimes their reportage of real subjects and real stories was so inaccurate that it cost them a lot of money. So now, even though they may focus on celebrity news and gossip and less than hard news, they generally can be trusted to get the facts right when they do bother to cover a hard story.

So your blanket condemnation does them a disservice, I think.

If the drunk on the corner cautioned me not to step in his vomit as I walked down the street I would take heed of his advice. Apparently some here might say, 'He's just a drunken derelict and can't be trusted to tell the truth or accurately interpret the things going on in his environment or care enough about his fellow man to give a caution to a total stranger." In which case they might step in the puke. And they might slip and fall in it.

Anyway, enough sermonizing.
