Oil will always be in their hands. As long as they control the vast majority of it and as oil is traded on market exchanges, it doesn't really matter what we do. We simply do not have sufficent volume to make the US a price setter.

Not really. There has been no actual evidence of speculators deliberately driving up the price of oil. What has been found is that of speculation, the only speculation that has driven up oil are those of financial funds using oil as a hedge against the dollar. These funds range from those on Wall Street to small private universities managing their endowment funds. Increasing supply won't do anything when the reason for their purchases is to hedge against the dollar. They are using oil like gold. Nothing to do with actual consumption of oil.

The dollar is the reason for high prices in a myriad of ways. If you want cheap gas, get Uncle George and Uncle Ben to appreciate the dollar.

Again not true. Donaldsutherland in the economics forum went over why gas prices are high, many of the reasons are due to the dollar and several reasons why the dollar is tanking is due to Administration policies. The Administration has open policy to let the dollar slide. As the supply argument has already been refuted, this is in fact caused far more by the Administration then the democrats.

Can those add 10 million barrels of light sweet crude to the world total volume? If not, coastal drilling is crap. And from what I've read, the US government gets rid of the sour, heavy oil that it gets as royalties from US producers. Not exactly a great way to decrease prices when you produce relatively little and a product that isn't in high demand.

No, but it is foolish to believe we can drill ourselves out of this problem or that we can actually decrease prices in a significant way. At BEST domestic drilling is stalling for time.
