It's opportunism that is behind why most new technologies come from the U.S.A. It's a virtue.

Bottom line: His plan is constructive and bipartisan. It makes sense. Even if the natural gas side of it fails to be transfered over to cars (there will need to be a lot more access to these stations...) because of consumer disinterest, we still will have a much cleaner alternative energy being used as a power source.

Well, I'm sure he wants to corner the market. I don't think it's a philanthropic venture. I don't mind if it's a win/win for everyone though.

Spanish Fork Utah Wind Turbines | Utah County Going Green

The latest and greatest wind farm is in Utah, and it is a ripoff. The citizens of Spanish Fork gave up substantial tax revenue for 10 years and the power goes to California......

and that is how it will get done....not that I disagree with it. We need to get off the dime, and if it comes out of our taxes, at least we will be getting something useful for what we pay, unlike our little war in Iraq...

I just have a bit of a problem with artificially inflating prices of one thing
so another becomes economically viable

if they were to tax the hell out of gasoline, as some put forth
we not only will see the recession all the chicken littles have been crying about
we will probably be in a depression

that is not something i am willing to accept at this point in time

With wind power, we need peaking plants all the more.....when the wind stops, we need something to come on line, more or less instantly.
We can't take gas away from our peaking plants and maintain the availability that we currently enjoy.
What about hydro?

Furthermore, doesn't Picken's plan also have something about developing a way to store vast amounts of electricity?

As I understand it, if we had some way of storing huge amounts of electricity, we could essentially store up huge amounts of excess and then when the sun goes down or the wind stops blowing transfer energy from these batteries. Furthermore, if we could develops such a power system we could let hydro plants run all of the time instead of using them when needed. Of course we'd also need a more efficient method of transferring power across our grid.

Storing electricity in the amounts needed is by far a larger problem than most people think. I suppose we could carve out large lakes and pump water into them during peak supply, and take water out for hydroelectric during peak demand.....but we aren't talking about a few kilowatts here, but millions of them...how about we just use nuclear?
