Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable - Yahoo! News

Quote:
BAGHDAD - Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his country will not accept any security deal with the United States unless it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

The comments by Mouwaffak al-Rubaie were the strongest yet by an Iraqi official about the deal now under negotiation with U.S. officials. They came a day after Iraq's prime minister first said publicly that he expects the pending troop deal with the United States to have some type of timetable for withdrawal.
This comes as a surprise to me. All along the media gave the impression that Iraq is not ready to stand on its own, US troops r needed in Iraq to stabilize Iraq and ME. We can't leave Iraq and let it erupt in civil war, this is a mess we made, we need to be responsible and be there as long as Iraq isn't able to stand on its feet.

Well, now frankly, Iraq is kicking the US troops out of it.

So what do u ppl think of this?

How will the McCain party take it? They seem to want to stay in Iraq as long as they r needed there.

How will this affect how much say US has on the oil game in the ME then?

Will this come to 'push to shove' if US does not want to leave Iraq? Any ramifications?

Any comments or views on this?

Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

BAGHDAD - Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his country will not accept any security deal with the United States unless it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

"Our stance in the negotiations underway with the American side will be strong ... We will not accept any memorandum of understanding that doesn't have specific dates to withdraw foreign forces from Iraq," al-Rubaie said.

I guess they're not very worried about the terrorists laying low until the withdrawal date.

Apparently, they -aren't- needed there.
Thus, McCain won't object to pulling them out.

Of course, if the Iraqi government thinks it is ready to go it on its own, taking over its own internal security, it means the war has been won.

Much to the chagrin of the liberal left...

That's because they've been driven out...
Iraqis lead final purge of Al-Qaeda - Times Online

Iraqis lead final purge of Al-QaedaMarie Colvin in Mosul
American and Iraqi forces are driving Al-Qaeda in Iraq out of its last redoubt in the north of the country in the culmination of one of the most spectacular victories of the war on terror.

After being forced from its strongholds in the west and centre of Iraq in the past two years, Al-Qaeda’s dwindling band of fighters has made a defiant “last stand” in the northern city of Mosul.

A huge operation to crush the 1,200 fighters who remained from a terrorist force once estimated at more than 12,000 began on May 10

Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

These statements here should calm folks down a bit.

The Iraqi proposal stipulates that, once Iraqi forces have resumed security responsibility in all 18 of Iraq's provinces, U.S.-led forces would then withdraw from all cities in the country.

So far, the United States has handed control of nine of 18 provinces to Iraqi officials.

9 in 5 years. 9 more to go. Yea McCain will be up for re-election...

You are correct. This is good news.

Fine and well, but one worry is what if Iraq isn't ready?

What if US troops pull out of Iraq on Iraq's request only to have Iraq erupt in civil war and request for US aid again? Then what?

Isn't that even more messy?

Well I guess now McCain party & Bush administration can pull their troops out without feeling guilty about leaving Iraq in the lurch, amidst fighting unpopularity as most US ppl do want US troops to leave Iraq and leave it quickly.

Wow, do u know how much money can US save from pulling their troops out of Iraq? Enuff to reinvest all of that in the needed areas of US's economy, infrastructure, healthcare and education which is all in shambles (not meant to be derogatory but it is true in one way or another).

Maybe so.
But if they think they're ready, then we need to give them a chance.
After all, how many times have we bailed out France...?

I'm all for staying as long as necessary to give the Iraqis what they need to stand up for themselves, be it 5, 10, 15 more years. Part of the definition of "long as necessary" is "when the Iraqis think they're ready".

Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

I agree. It looks as if the path is made clearly for US troops to leave and not have any condemnation for doing so, having had Iraq's blessing.

I guess if needed, it is np for US troops to help Iraq again. If they ever need it.

I am curious to see the new developments in Iraq following US troops' departure.

Likweise.

But, it appears the external terrorist threat has been almost completely reduced, mostly by Iraqi efforts. The internal conflict is something the Iraqi government needs to deal with, and it appears they are ready to take it on.

Good for them!

And, when the Iraq government succeeds, which I'm sure we all hope they do, there's only one person that can be given credit for it:

The same guy that was going to be given all the blame if they failed...
