Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable for US troops

I think this is great. This is the exact thing we've WANTED them to do. To stand up and say "We're ready, so lets move forward with this". I've said for a long time now I am adamantly against the U.S. placing any time tables on withdrawl but instead it is the IRAQI GOVERNMENT that needs to be stating a time table. This isn't exactly that, but its close.

Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

We can't withdraw our troops, it would upset the unemployment numbers and make the economy look even worse.....

The Iraqi leaders are indicating a desire to stand on their own and our leaders are saying no. How stupid is that? It is Bush stupid, the new world standard for willful ignorance.

Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

And he's right to say "no" at the moment. Though really the part that talks about him saying no time table in this story isn't a quote of him and could be just noting his previous statements.

Our National Security Advisor does not set policy. He can't tell other countries what to do in regards to the U.S. and expect it to be backed up. He's right in stating that this needs to come from the Prime Minister (or another full body of government). Once it DOES come from them, then I'm all in favor of putting a hard time line...more precisely, I'm all in favor of telling them to give us a hard time line they'd wish, and then we match it with what's feasable and come to a solution.

Re: Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable

Liberals tend to see this as a rebuke to the Bush administration, when in fact it is exactly the opposite.

Our entire goal in that country is to set up a strong Iraqi government that doesn't NEED our military support. The fact that the Iraqi's are asking us to leave is a sign that their young democracy (that we helped build) is able to stand on its own. Taking this position legitimizes the government in the eyes of Iraqi nationalists like Sadr, who are potentially far more dangerous than AQ to the current Iraqi government if they do not believe their leaders truly represent them.

America doesn't want a puppet in the middle east. We want a stable, democratic, self supporting nation that we can have friendly - or at least neutral - relations with.
