Gore begins huge public campaign to go green

I saw Al on 60 Minutes last night. He's donated all the money he's raised from his film and Nobel Peace Prize to this campaign. Love him or hate him, he's passionate about the planet and it's beyond me how one can fault him for that.

Gore begins huge public campaign to go green
By Juliet Eilperin
The Washington Post

Former Vice President Al Gore is using money he received from prizes and his award-winning movie to help pay for the push.

WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Al Gore will launch a three-year, $300 million campaign Wednesday aimed at mobilizing Americans to push for aggressive reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, a move that ranks as one of the most ambitious and costly public-advocacy campaigns in U.S. history.

The Alliance for Climate Protection's "we" campaign will employ online organizing and television ads on shows ranging from "American Idol" to "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

It highlights the extent to which Americans' growing awareness of global warming has yet to translate into policy changes, Gore said last week.

He said the campaign, which he's helping fund, was started in large part because he fears lawmakers aren't willing to curb human-generated emissions linked to climate change.

"This climate crisis is so interwoven with habits and patterns that are so entrenched, the elected officials in both parties are going to be timid about enacting the bold changes that are needed until there is a change in the public's sense of urgency in addressing this crisis," Gore said.

"I've tried everything else I know to try. The way to solve this crisis is to change the way the public thinks about it."

Private contributors already have donated or committed half the money needed for the entire campaign, he said.

Have at it babe, but remember turnabout is fair play.

Consider your spanking courtesy Exxon-Mobil.

Seriously thoug, I think its particularly dangerous to make an appeal to the public, when the information is incomplete and the debate still exists. It seems that forging ahead in spite of those things has been pretty controversial in other aspects of our political scenery recently.

What I fail to understand is where the Damage might be done in going green. Likely we will create jobs, lower our dependence on oil, Recreate our technology sector, add to manufacturing, shore up economic weaknesses, pay down the national debt, and help the environment...etc.
I seriously see no downside in this, unless you own an Oil Company and are not bright enough to diversify into the renewable energy market. In many ways this change is inevitable and moving forward at a dramatic pace already...for those who don't want to ride the wave, Go ahead and watch me surf.

I too think those are all great reasons to go "green". AGW smacks of fear mongering. I see no difference between "Iraq has WMDs" and "There is no debate about AGW". But I can support the Iraq war, and alternative energies R&D, for different reasons that make more and better sense.

Agreed. I think it's a great idea to conserve energy by turning off lights, buying local, using more fuel-efficient vehicles, etc. I also think it would be an incredible boon to the country if we would start developing more nuclear energy. I wish Gore would spend his $300m lobbying for that.
