Re: Barr may run for president on Libertarian ticket
Why would I want to read something that ruins Babar? Babar was such cool guy.
Actually the French children's books are are pretty ****ed up, involving death and poisoning and colonialism, however the bowdlerized American version is solid children's entertainment. |

Re: Barr may run for president on Libertarian ticket
Oops, sorry. We're like waaay off topic.
Back to libertarian presidential candidates. As if it matters who runs. As if a libertarian would ever be electable. |

Re: Barr may run for president on Libertarian ticket
Babar is as relevant as this guy.
They didn't let me read them...because, if you've read them you'll know. They're insane. |

I didn't think they were "insane". Certainly no more "insane" than the Curious George books; in the original one (written in the early 40s) George is kidnapped from Africa by the Man in the Yellow Hat, who says "Oh, what a cute little monkey. I think I'd like to take him home with me" and then lures George from his tree and shoves him into a burlap sack. Back home in the city, George and the man relax after supper by smoking pipes together ("After a good meal and a good pi... errm, I mean, bath... a good meal and a good bath... no, honey, George isn't smoking a pipe. That's just a bubble pipe that he plays with in the bathtub") and then the man goes away, leaving George alone to play with the telephone and accidentally call the fire department, which arrives and hauls him off to prison ("You fooled the fire department! We're going to lock you up where you can't do any more harm!"). After spending awhile behind bars, George manages to elude the guards, climb out a window, walk across some telephone wires to freedom, and hook up with the Man with the Yellow Hat again, who takes him to live at the zoo ("What a nice place for George to live!"). Although obviously he doesn't remain there for long, because in the subsequent 50 books, he's abroad in the city again. Anyway, there are weird and disturbing elements to most children's books, especially the old ones. Dr. Seuss books are utterly insane (though brilliant), and his oldest ones are extremely disturbing and un-PC from a modern-day perspective. |

Re: Barr may run for president on Libertarian ticket
The Brother's Grimm being obsessed with plague isn't the same as those bizarre, reactionary, imperialism-apologist agitprop Babar books.
my parents didn't care if i learned curses or saw smoking displayed favorably but they didn't want to read about imperialism until I was old enough to analyze it more fully |

Re: Barr may run for president on Libertarian ticket
Barr is NOT a Libertarian.
1. Authored and sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act 2. Supported "War on Drugs" 3. Wanted to ban the practice of Wicca in our military Bob Barr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I have not seen anything to make me believe these things have changed in him. He is is not about real freedom, only his own definition of it. |
