Merkel admits Germany's 'Holocaust shame'

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Israel of Germany's "Holocaust shame," and asserted its support for the Jewish state during an unprecedented speech to the Knesset on Tuesday.

Germany and Israel are linked "in a very special way" by the memory of the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews were killed under Nazi Germany and its allies in World War II, she said in the first address a German chancellor has ever made to the Knesset.

Speaking to the Knesset, Angela Merkel also spoke of Germany's unwavering support for Israel calling the Iranian president's nuclear ambitions "a major danger" not only to Israel, but to the world as well. The German Chancellor called on him to prove that he does not want a nuclear bomb.

I thought that Merkel's historic speech was awesome. She vowed to protect Israel against all threats, especially Iran. Merkel has committted Germany to protect Israel...and that is great!

So, which countries now have official policies of aiding and defending Israel? The United States and Germany, it seems. Ethiopia has a long, quiet history of helping Israel, but this country can only do so much...as it has it's own little conflicts to fight.

Because Iran's development of the bomb was totally unrelated to Isreal's.

They built their nuclear weapons as a reaction to Israel. Israel nuclearized the Middle East, and America's support of that action is why we will never have any moral leverage in any debate about the issue with the Arabs or Persians.

You simply cannot tell the Muslim world that it's ok that Israel has the bomb, but it's not ok for them to have the bomb.

Actually you can.

Why should you trust a nation that is not-democratic (democratic in name only), ruled by religious theology, funds terrorism overseas?.....

I can make the distinction between America, France, Britain and even Russia having nuclear weapons as opposed to Saudi Arabia or Iran..... It's really not that hard to reasonably distinguish between the two.

You see I am not one of these non-nuclear proliferation hippies, I think that any democratic, pluralistic, and liberal society should be allowed nukes (I know Russia or China don't really fall into this category, but these nations are not 'Religion of Peace' nut bags). What I don't want to see is nuclear weapons in the hands of people that intend to destroy or at least have a pathological hatred of their neighbors.

Lastly because Israel has a nuclear weapons program (which, mind you is undeclared) subsequently many of her Arab neighbors have been less interested in 'smashing the Jews into the Mediterranean sea'. Game theory at its best.

Maybe you forgot the Muslims are the ones who cant seem to play nice with the joo's. Maybe it’s the way the Koran trashes them at every turn. Tell me why is it ALWAYS the Muslims who threaten and trash the Jewish?
