Well...this doesn't bode well concerning his "internal" views on race....

The Campaign Spot on National Review Online

Obama: Grandmother Was A "Typical White Person" - Politics on The Huffington Post

Typical? White?

How would "typical Black" be received? "Typical Chinese?" Though not a race, but rather gender, how about if he said, "typical woman?"

I could understand it if he said, "typical person" and left race entirely out of the statement, but...???

 Not off to a great start "walkin' the talk" of his speech which supposedly "transcends" race.

When I heard his statement, it made me cringe; however, I have to admit that what he expressed about his grandmother is...um...well...true.

I was fine with the grandmother thing...my grandmother, the sweetest women in the world EVER, made comments like, "My heavens, what a nice *black* man"--as if "what a nice man" didn't suffice. I understand the difference in generational perception of race and believe that was what he referenced in his speech.

This modifier "white" though, indicates that he may harbor some racial "profiles" of his own.

If it's a slip--fine...we all "slip" at times. However, Obama needs to be REALLY careful about such slips since he's being so scrutinized on this stuff right now and walking a very fine line per his speech--A line concerning transcending race that I think we should strive toward.

You are right. He sure could have said that better.

Obama's granny was probably thinking that a *typical black person - one who would steal her purse or try to sell her crack, was coming down the street prompting her to cross the street and walk down the other side.

Obama referenced his grandmother's race--not her age--as "typical."

Yes, he wasn't clear. But in context of her generation, it is typical. And to be quite honest, I have been in plenty of homogenous situations and it is still typical. Even my generation says that crap. My freakin in laws say it and I am raising my biracial neice. I have heard it at every job I have ever had. It is the truth.

In the context of the speech, I see very few alternatives to the phrasing if one intended to make the point. Its almost funny to see this part of a speech intended to bring some level of honestly to the whole "Race" issue in this country, get singled out by a "Typical White Woman", Somehow I don't think it would be as funny if you were black...heh.

I'd cross the street based on someone's appearance--not "race"--but the "scruffy crack addict look"--absolutely I'd move away whether it's a he/she/black/white/Asian/Middle Eastern/Aboriginal/whatever.

Just saying "typical person" (without "white") would have fit very nicely and would have continued the point he made in his speech more appropriately.

I totally agree. I'm telling you, even though his wording would apply to me (and I am ashamed to admit that, but I would be lying if I stated otherwise), I had an immediate reaction in my gut of :wow:.

Spare me:roll:

What is this? Some kind of attempt at imposing "white guilt." And "funny"? Don't know where you get that--are YOU "race-baiting?"

That's funny coming from DP's "Lady of Perpetual Guilt"

(Just kidding, I thought it was funny. I hope you do too.)

We are one people--how we ACT is something else entirely.

(don't worry...I'm not offended...but you should go say a few "Hail Mary's" just for your own good;))

Face it friend. Obama is a racist just like his pastor and his grandmother. He did not modify it as "tyical white woman from that generation" but instead insulted me and you calling her a typical white woman.

You can only make a number of racial gaffs before you become considered a racist.

This is the nail in his coffin and good riddance.

Obama is the david duke of the democrat party.

add this to the church he attends and the pastor who he calls a mentor and this question is answered.

How many "slip ups" would one give to say Trent lott?

Most succint point on this topic Racism is a two way street...

That's funny, most "white women" I know are not like his granmother. are the ones you know "typical" in his "context"?

All Obama was saying is that his grandmother, (like most white people) would be somewhat uncomfortable meeting "somebody on the street that she doesn't know."

Of course that is true. Accusations of racism based on this statement are way overblown.

Typical media distortion :)

You forgot "black" after "somebody"

It came out of his own freaking mouth! how you can claim distortion is beyond me. It was a racist comment clear as day!

That's the distortion I was talking about.

"... .. The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it..." - Senator Barack Obama

Right there is where he realized he messed up.

But you are a "typical woman" caught up in the emotion that is Obama its just the nature of gender in our society as women are bred to discount logic in favor of emotion.

You realize that white people still say "ni**er"? I hear it way too often. Often enough to call it typical.

Obama just got an endorsement from Richardson. He is far from done. He is far from a racist. You are losing credibility every time you try to make that claim.
