I've also done some researching for Christian images and I've noticed that most of the images I've seen out of a 100 - 99 have a white Jesus with soft hair and brown/hazel eyes. None of these are acknowledging of historical accuracy or of the Middle Eastern appearance Jesus would have had. I was wondering - am I the only one that has realized this?

A quick search of Jesus images on Yahoo yielded these :

I'm not saying it's some kind of conspiracy but there is only so much artistic license an artist can take before the image is completely wrong. Your thoughts?
Well what you,ve got to remember is that most of the more famous paintings of jesus are from a time when most europeans wouldnt know what those in the middle east looked like.

Re: Brown Jesus and Appearance.

There's a book by a guy named Morton Smith (who is a mainstream scholar, not some nutbag) called "Jesus the Magician" in which he argues, conclusively IMO, that Jesus was a magician. That is, he practiced magic, which is where his reputation as a miracle worker comes from.

Anyway, it's been about a decade since I read the book. But he does quote the one quasi-contemporary physical description we have of Jesus. Apparently, according to that description, Jesus was a wizened older black man who had spells (probably in Coptic) scratched into his flesh. This would probably make him an initiate of the Cult of Osiris operating in Lower Egypt at that time--and also makes sense of the flight into Egypt.

Re: Brown Jesus and Appearance.

The early Christians didn't really paint Jesus and the earliest works do give him Middle Easter features. The problem here is these works lack color and do give Jesus a pale toned skin.

Take the pale skin color, flowing hair of the first images of Jesus; add in the only facial features later artists know how to draw (European) and give 500-700 years of copying and re-construction and you get the images that are in the OP.

Jesus in 400CE (Israel)

Jesus in 700CE (Greek)

Jesus in 1000CE (Greek)

Jesus in 1400CE (Italy)

Jesus in 1500CE (Spain)

Add in the OP's images at the end of this for 1500CE+ European artist deciptions.

Re: Brown Jesus and Appearance.

Actually, one church that gets Jesus pretty accurate is the Jehovah's Witnesses. They even portray him with short hair, which was most likely accurate.

Of course, they're crazy otherwise.

In Islam the pictures are not allowed. In the rest of the world they are. WikiPedia is not Islamic and therefore does not have to adhere to Islamic rules. Wikipedia is for knowledge and education and these pictures fall into both categories.

I fail to see the problem of people respectfully asking a company to respect their beliefs.

It's because they are brown.

Re: Brown Jesus and Appearance.

Modern images of Jesus are based off of Cesare Borgia who many perceived to look like Jesus. See the resemblance?

Re: Brown Jesus and Appearance.

I think that most of the paintings we see today were culturally influenced. As several of the image examples have shown. I found this by google...an interpretation from the Shroud of Turin which the Holy Roman Catholic Church declares is the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.
