The name “Jane” was fictitious, but the person it represents was real, and was chosen as a typical member for the writer to tell the story of how a typical desperate woman such as the 21 year old Susan would do to seek out a typical illegal abortionist such as “Jane” for underground abortion service.

I prefer to think of it more like.. "Being addicted to smoking is a tragedy, but it's someone's choice". I don't think that smoking should be outlawed, even though there are few positive effects associated with it (the same can be argued for abortion) and in a perfect world no one would do it.

But it's the person's choice.
