I'm not going to provide you with research that you could easily do on your own. Why don't we just do it this way: you tell us who you think should have gotten Person of the Year and why you think Vladimir Putin shouldn't have. The bottom line is that there are always going to be people who disagree with who is chosen. I'm sure they had their reasons for choosing him. In fact, it probably explains in the article why he was chosen. If you don't like it, don't buy the magazine. Start your own magazine and name your own ideal Person of the Year.

Re: Vladmir Putin 2007 "Person of the Year??!!

Putin has indeed made a major impact on the world this year. He has on more than one occassion thumbed his nose at the U.S., brought his country into economic prosperity, took over private oil interests for Russia and is making himself a czar. Not bad for a years worth of work.

If you can name one event in 2001 that had the most impact on the world what would it be?

In 2007 there were a number of substantial items, as listed in the Times article. Like it or not, Putin had a great impact on molding what direction the world will be moving.

Uhm actually I don't care that much, My point is that there have been more impactful people than some wannabe dictator that we rarely hear about.

The Times doesn't think so and since it's their list they can decide.

In any case, who are the more influential people? I would love to discuss.

The reason we rarely hear about him is because our media doesn't and has never really focused on events outside of our own borders unless it somehow directly has to do with us. Again, who do you think was more impactful and more deserving of the title?

Re: Vladmir Putin 2007 "Person of the Year??!!

Person of the Year isn't about who's been a good little boy or girl all year long. It's about who's made the biggest change in history this year. Who's been the most newsworthy. It's not supposed to be some kind of Honor.

I'll say it is their developement of their oil and gas indusrty that has given them the current rise economically, not Putin. So now they can afford a piece of beef instead of Stalin's rat casserole but glaring down on the now joyous people is Putin's hand of authority slowly closing the vlave that permitted personal freedoms to flourish. It is reflective of human nature for them to hold him high above his predecessors with food on the table but they will live to regret it in the not too distant future.
