Ah, the beauty of cultural relativism.
The moment you claim that there is nothing hideous or barbaric about slicing off a women's clitoris and sewing her labia shut because it's someone's culture and it's not wrong to them is the moment your definition of right and wrong lose all merit.
If everything's acceptable because of culture, what's the point of discussing it? When every action is right, the very definition of the word loses its meaning.
My point wasnt, "different strokes for different folks". Given enough time, a truly talented philosopher could conjure up a logical argument where clitoral removal is beneficial to a marriage.
The point was, just because the people in any culture are human, and the human ability to inflict cruelty, THIS is persistent in all cultures. It wasnt 150 years ago when American soldiers were raping and pillaging Native American camps.
To actually think that this subcultural group of fundamentalists are the only people capable of ending their own life in attempt to do what they believe is right is silly. Americans do it every day, in the form of working risky jobs that will one day kill them, so their family can live a better life. The soldier who enlists and says, "i am willing to die for my country" is willing to die for his country.
It all depends on your particular POV.
