(Fmr. Alabama Gov.) Siegelman Sentencing Today

Quote:
Facing the prospect of decades in prison, former Gov. Don Siegelman and ex-HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy will attempt to convince a federal judge today that overzealous prosecutors in the corruption case are seeking sentences that are too extreme.

But they say their ultimate goal isn't a lighter sentence, but getting a step closer to an appeals court overturning the entire case.

Both men say today is about putting everything in perspective, showing that the 25-year sentence prosecutors are asking for Scrushy and the 30 years for Siegelman is too much. But prosecutors said that considering the charges a jury convicted the two men of a year ago, the sentences are appropriate.
Quote:
Federal prosecutors argued that while he was governor, Siegelman had arranged to have Scrushy appointed to a hospital regulatory board in exchange for arranging $500,000 in donations to the then-governor's 1999 campaign to create a lottery to fund schools.

Both men were convicted in June 2006 on bribery, mail fraud and conspiracy charges. Siegelman also was convicted of obstruction of justice.
Good to see some scumbags get the punishment they deserve, although I think the proposed sentences are a bit harsh for this penalty.

My favorite part though?

Quote:
Both also have pointed to an affidavit by a former campaign worker for Gov. Bob Riley they say indicates the investigation into Siegelman was part of a Republican conspiracy linked to presidential aide Karl Rove.
No matter what, blame it on Rove.

I voted for him. Should've known better. He and Scrushy are both scum.
