Mohammed Becomes Second Most Popular U.K. Baby Name

June 6, 2007 10:25 a.m. EST

Julie Farby - AHN News Writer

London, England (AHN) - With a birth rate nearly three times that of the general population, the approximately 1.5 million Muslims living in the United Kingdom make up 3 percent of the overall population, and is having quite an impact on the culture of the nation-perhaps most notably in the area of baby names.

The popularity of naming a son after the Islamic prophet Mohammed has helped propel the name to the second most popular for baby boys in Britain, rising 12 percent from lat year.

According to Britain's Office for National Statistics, when all the different spellings of the name are taken into account, there were some 5,991 baby boys given the name Mohammed in Britain this year. That statistic means only the name Jack is more popular, with a total of 6,928 baby boys given that name. Thomas came in third with 5,921 names, while Joshua and Oliver rounded out the top five.

According to national statistics, the name Mohammed, which entered the top thirty most popular names some seven years ago, is likely to surpass the top spot held by Jack by the end of the year.

And who wouldn't want to name their son after such a warrior as he?

Maybe by next year "Mohammed" will be #1 in the UK. And how soon before he's #1 in the USA?

Quote:
Today, the Muslim birth rate in Europe is three times higher than the non-Muslim one. If current trends continue, the Muslim population of Europe will nearly double by 2015, while the non-Muslim population will shrink by 3.5 percent.

In my neck o' the woods, Jesús is still a far more popular name than Mohammed.
However, what with the conservatives trying to deport all the Jesúses, who knows what tomorrow will bring?

It's functional, versatile, and has a catchy beat you can dance to.
Little Hammy. Meddy. Moe. Whatevah.
In my family, we tend to go with "B" names, but that's just us.
