Should the US interfere in Darfur??

This is a hypothetical (although not a far streched) question regarding the situation in Darfur.

Should the US, disregard the inaction of the UN, and interfere in the situation in Darfur?? Or should we wait for international approval before we violate their soveriegn borders??

And now for an oversimplified answer!

American's don't care about actual genocide, civil wars, tyrants, or suffering unless it has to do with our interests in the middle east.

In my best Kanye West: "Americans just don't care about Africa," just as long as the diamonds keep rolling in.

We aren't waiting for international support, we're just being apathetic until the world community makes us pretend to give a crap. Until then, we're not going to do something to blatantly piss off China.

Does this make me a cynical non-interventionist? I can never tell...

The US should not interfere in Darfur and it does not matter if the UN approves it or not. The US military is simply not good with this kind of things.

If China would interfere there, this would be ok with me, if the African Union wants to do it, this sounds ok, too. The US should stay out.

Why would the Chinese care if we assist the AU with their Darfur issues?

Because China has invested heavily in Sudenese oil, and I imagine they wouldn't want us ****ing up their Oil supply.

Thread Starter Re: Should the US interfere in Darfur??

Part of my reason for asking this question, is to gauge what you all feel is more important. Waiting for international support, or going alone when it comes to genocidal affairs.

I am not interested in this turning into a "When a country has interests at stake" discussion. We all know that is always a determining factor.

I am asking, all things even, should we respect and wait for the international community to ok action before we go in, or should we go in alone without them if need be?

Re: Should the US interfere in Darfur??

One might think it's simple enough now even for American nationalists (or "patriots", "troop supporters", "real liberals") to get it.

Problem is that China is arming the perpertrators of the genocide in the Sudan. Why would they stop a genocide that there helping with?

Re: Should the US interfere in Darfur??

In a perfect world, the collective nations on Earth would unite and do what the useless and good for nothing United Nations SUPPOSED to do and handle crap like this.

But everybody just stands by and waits for the US to take action and once againt put our balls on the chopping block. Sure as hell can't count on any others out there to try to do what's right.

There was a civil war in South Sudan for many, many, many years and now there is none anymore. After it ended, the Chinese went there with a few thousand troops to secure pipelines. There is a civil war in Darfur now, I have no knowledge about a genocide or Chinese arms supplies to perpertrators.
