Re: 'Immigration' game at NYU crosses line, students say

Descriptions from three different liberal attendees:

Quote:
Cool stuff. The republicans set up a table with barricades around it that were breached by potesters, but calmly. A bunch of protesters from all sorts of left wing organizations marched around in a big circle chanting various stuff - one sounded like "They call us wetbacks, but we say fight back" but maybe not. One of the republicans, I guess a spokesman, got into a debate with the head of Lucha, the Latino organization. It lasted over an hour - it was heated and spirited, but not mean-spirited. No threats of violence. Even a hug at the end. They were surrounded by probably a hundred people, waving cameras, tape recorders, signs, etc. Mucho news media there too - even the Times. Eventually the marchers moved to the park. Then it started to rain and everyone went away. Fun times.
Quote:
The Democrats intended it to be a silent protest to demonstrate their maturity. Unsurprisingly, by screaming at the tops of their lungs outside of Silver and on their march through the park, they demonstrated that their maturity was about on par with the Republicans'.

Congratulations, Democratic protestors; might makes right.
Quote:
I was at the protest from 11:00 - 1:15 (when I had to leave to eat lunch before my 2:00 class). The whole thing was very peaceful, although the communists/anarchists/fringe people kind of annoyed me. Overall, I enjoyed it - there was almost a sort of party atmosphere to it.
And a video (with the worst rendition of "I Shot the Sheriff" ever)

Re: 'Immigration' game at NYU crosses line, students say

I found out how this was directed at mexicans. On their event page, they had a caricuture of a mexican. Now it was taken down due to the controversy. I site the local news channel NY1's "the call" today as my source. Sorry I can't do better its not that high profile.

Plus if you read RightatNYU's 1st account, you'll see that the head of the Latino rights club was arguing with the spokesperson of the republican club. If it wasn't directed at mexicans they wouldn't have been talking.

An asian guy...wearing a sombrero...singing a reggae song..That is the funniest **** I've seen in a while. I'm sure nobody in their right mind will deny that there is no place like America after seeing a video like that.

It wasn't a caricature of a mexican, they included in the pictures section of the event a political cartoon that showed a border with a fence, people crawling under the fence, and then getting free healthcare, jobs, and housing from americans on the other side. The cartoon was from Dennis Cagle and was featured in thousands of papers across the country. So if you want to call it racist to include that in there, then you better go let USA Today, Time Magazine and a couple thousand other papers know that they're apparently racist too.

Your logic doesn't follow. Let's say I'm at an event arguing for equal rights for short people. A fat dude comes up to me and starts arguing with me. Because of that, does that mean the event necessarily had anything to do with fat people? No, it means the fat dude took offense to what I said, and wanted to argue.

The fact that Sarah was arguing with the guy from LUCHA doesn't "prove" that this was directed only at mexicans at all.

Eh, I don't mind. It successfully took some attention away from the stupidity of the main event. So thanks, I guess. =P

It's always nice to see someone from your side demonstrate your belief in free speech and tolerance...as long as folks agree with you.

Your post has been the best evidence I've seen on this board in a long time that shows the left's total disregard for what this country is supposed to stand for. Congrats.

Re: 'Immigration' game at NYU crosses line, students say

I see nothing wrong with the game, as far as legality goes. I also see nothing wrong with people being offended by the game and acting on their feelings. I feel the game was mean spirited. If the intetion of the creators of the game was dialogue. There are better ways of achieving that goal. This thread proves that point. We are not discussing the issue, but whether the game is racist or not.

From what I understand, it is very difficult to come here legally from Mexico. Call me racist or bigoted if you want. I'm proud of the Latino influence in our country. Mexico is our neighbor. I feel they deserve a chance to come here and legally work. Those that are already here. Well, if they step forward and become documented. I have no problem with them staying. In short I support the guest worker program. I support greater collaboration with Mexico on immigration issues. Other illegals, well a fair process needs to be setup to judge on a case by case basis (or something like that).

You think so? The CR's tried to do an immigration forum on campus a couple months ago. They advertised like crazy, invited people, flyered, etc. 50 people showed up. They did this event, and around 500 people showed up, it was on every news channel in the country, it made the NYTimes and the BBC, and it DID spur discussion about illegal immigration everywhere.

And I would agree with you. However, that's a far cry from current policy, and is even further from what the protesters were advocating.
