Good point re: his age, obviously this fellow was not in the 16 yo with his 15 you girlfriend category.

Still, it is a large leap to assert he was "raping and sodomizing little children", the assertion that started this discussion.

Re: Registered sex offender wins a big lottery

There are so many myths and so much misinformation in this thread....its probably pointless to even respond. However, to correct a few things:

1. Sex Offender does not necessarily mean "child abuser". There are many people who are required to register who are not pedophiles.

2. Registration does not necessarily mean it was a heinous crime. In California, Sex Offender registration is required even for misdemeanor sexual battery. Do you know what that is? That would be something like slapping somebody's butt in a bar, pinching a girl/guys butt at school, grabbing a breast over clothing.
Granted....I am not saying these are things that should be encouraged. But the public has a HUGE misconception over registered sex offenders. With the advent of public extremism in such things as "Megan's law"...it was turned the public into a "mob" mentality. True...there are some offenders that probably should be closely monitored....but is it fair for someone who committed one of the aforementioned crimes to be branded a "sex offender" and subjected to that type of ridicule?

3. Civil laws allow sex offenders to be sued. Several people stated that the sex offender who wins the lottery should be required to give the money to the victim. That is already the law....if the person sues and receives a judgement...meaning the jury or judge or settlement determine that they are entitled to monetary damages....the law allows for attachment of lottery winnings.

I am not a "Pro" Sex Offender. However, I think you need to have balance. The law provides the punishment for the offense...but yet many of these guys are hounded and subjected to continuous abuse even after serving their time. Maybe you disagree that they should be released. If you have a problem with the sentence...contact your representative....and work within the system to change the law. What I cannot condone is mob mentality that reeks of vigilantee-ism. While there are some crimes that are so heinous that the person SHOULD spend the rest of their life locked up, there are many others that span the entirety of the spectrum. Its important to use discretion and realize that not every act and every person should be treated exactly the same.

In some states, you can even be put on a sexual offender list for the heinous crime of public urination.

So, for this specific man... would someone advocate the death penalty now? I mean.. we know nothing of the situation, and the current system of registering sex offenders needs to be changed a bit to keep people who were involved in consensual sexual offenses from being on there.

Surely you mean "advocate".
'Abdicate" gives your statement a meaning which is most likely the opposite of what you intended.

That is interesting because so many laws are being created these days before legislators can even understand that the concept of the law, compared to the other laws, court decisions, and amendments and rules we have to follow, keeps us from properly being capable of enforcing them.

Like NC's new "No Teens on Cellphone While Driving Law"
Teens can't talk on cellphones while driving, unless talking to their parents or Emergency Personnel.
My question is.. I see someone who looks like they could be 17, talking on a cell phone driving down the road, not violating any other law. What is my reasonable suspicion for stopping them? I can't stop them and demand they let me see who they were talking to. And, how many people remain in a conversation when the police stop them? (There are some.. disrespectul ****s) What if I thought the person was 17 but they are actually 19.......
See where Im getting at?
Same thing for that Maine No Smoking with Kids in the Car law... that law will yield very small results.
though it is not law in Fl yet
I will not stop doing it until i see COPS no longer doing these things
if they are so important than cops are the first ones who should be subject to such rules

You are aware, that under current law, if you decided to urinate in the street due to consuming said vodka, and a 15 year old happened to pass buy, you could be become a sex offender, right?
