Elders Scroll V: Skyrim

My biggest problem with Oblivion was that the danged enemies leveled up as fast as I did, so at level 20 I was still getting the crap kicked out of me by a damned wolf!!

Also the plot was butt-awful and the oblivion portals were boring as heck. :( When I replayed it, I rushed around to close all the portals by level 7, then sat back and played Oblivion like an explore-the-world sandbox game. More satisfying that way.

Hi DiAnna.

The unique thing about the Elder Scrolls experience on the PC is that such problems can be easily fixed by downloading the necessary mod. The developers can never always satisfy everyone.....the construction kit, on the other hand, can. Unfortunately such options are unavailable on other ports of the game (PS3,Xbox).

I agree, but Fallout and Fallout 2 are classics, created by a brilliant game company that no longer exists. I adored the old isometric RPGs, and cried when I realized that they were a thing of the past. Unfortunately, the new technology and the immense cost of producing games nowadays means that we will never see the like of the old Fallouts, Planescape:Torment, Baldurs Gate series and Icewind Dale games again.

A moment of silence for their passing.... :(

You should check out the isometric fallout 3 the Japanese made. Not too sure if it has been translated yet though. It's on the developers "to-do" list if that helps put you at ease.

Yeah, I run only PC games, I have no consoles. For my second run-through I downloaded a mod that made the leveling process a bit better. But dang, it shouldn't have been necessary for fans to make the game playable, y'know? ;)

Lots more information available: Skyrim:Skyrim - UESPWiki

New gameplay features introduced include dual-wielding (assigning a weapon or spell to each hand), and new weapons that can be smithed at a forge from heated metal. Unique finishing attacks are used for each weapon. Players can challenge (and be challenged by) any NPC to a western-style duel in the streets. The third-person perspective has been improved, and the heads-up-display is optional. Stamina can be expended quickly by choosing to "sprint", and backward movement is slower than forward movement.[1][4]

Character development has been changed as well; "class" selection is no longer used, and instead of the twenty-one skills in Oblivion (twenty-seven in Morrowind), Skyrim will feature eighteen skills (one of the removed skills is Mysticism). Faster player level increases can be achieved by increasing developed skills. Gaining a level also grants the player level-specific skill abilities and an increase in health along with an option for a greater increase in health, or an increase in magicka or stamina. Leveling is possible above level 50, although at a much decreased rate. Level-scaling will be used, but will be more comparable to Fallout 3's system than Oblivion's. Five magic schools are used: Destruction, Alteration, Conjuration, Restoration, and Illusion. Regarding the player's personal physical appearance; there will be ten playable races, the player character will still be very customizable, and beards and customizable body features will be among the new options available.[1][4]

Player/NPC interactions have been improved. Conversations between the player and NPCs will not freeze the rest of the game world, and the NPCs will continue their activities while occasionally glancing at the player. A new system "Radiant Story" has been developed for quests; NPCs react to the player's actions in new ways, such as fighting over possession of an item dropped by the player or attempting to return it to the player. The shop of a killed NPC may be inherited by another NPC, who may then offer the items/quests of the first but may not have the same disposition toward the player. The player's actions also directly affect side quest creation, as well as altering parts of quests. Character creation also affects which quests are available, with some quests only being offered to those specializing in certain skills. Dialog options are also available with hostile NPCs.[1][4]

Bolding is mine, for stuff that caught my eye. Some sounds great, some worrying(see leveling).

Enjoy the new screenshots children:

The Orc's look like really scary ****ers now!

November can't come any faster :( Wouldn't it be nice if Bethesda broke the mold and moved the release date back?

ehh would be but not happening. :2razz:

Mate i posted this thread on the 12-12-10 and you posted on the same day basically saying you can't wait. It's April the 19th now already. So much time has passed but it seems like nothing! So i'm sure you'll be lining up outside GAME to by your copy of TES before you know it. I went so far as to buy a new computer so i'm really looking forward to getting it.

New details have just come through!

A quick post from GameInformer:

An intrepid Bethesda forum-goer has posted a summary of a Skyrim preview from German magazine PC Games. Some of the details are even new.

The reported details are minor, but any Skyrim news is good news, right?

  • The map is 3D, but you can't make notes on it
  • Some dragons are friendly, at least to the point of holding conversations with the player
  • Some level of economic simulation is in, with the prices of goods reflecting the state of the world
  • Blowing wind will whip up the surface of bodies of water
  • Lockpicking: still a minigame
  • In addition to the five major cities, there will be eight or nine smaller settlements to visit
  • You can buy houses again
  • Children will appear in some form in-game

The report originally had a tidbit about planned Facebook integration, which was shot down by Bethesda marketing guy Pete Hines. Hines did not make any move to deny the rest of the report, so my guess for now is that it's legit. It's legit, see below.

No huge surprises here, though I'm curious how Bethesda is approaching the problem posed by the presence of children in the go-anywhere, do-anything world of The Elder Scrolls. If it were me, I'd probably go with "avenging god immediately lightning bolts your face off" as a solution to anyone who harms a child.

We've reached out to Bethesda for comment and will update this story with any new information. A Bethesda spokesperson has confirmed that the information is legit. Fans rejoice! I know you were all dying to know about lockpicking.

It's weird, graphic, story and world details all sound awesome. Gameplay details all sound horrible.

I don't know why they need to change the gameplay at all. Just better graphics, different world, different story. That's all I'm asking for.
I've been replaying Oblivion for like 5 times so far.

It's not even entirely that. I understand that gameplay should change some between games. I just don't like the direction it is going. Oblivion gameplay was much simplified over Morrowwind, and Skyrim is going to be much simplified from Oblivion, and with a more traditional leveling system(which I am not entirely opposed to in concept, but will have to see). TES games should not be made for consoles, it ruins the awesome gameplay.

Is this an MMORPG?

I played console games for years, and years, then skipped right over PC games to WoW. It's a huge time sink for me (though I have cut back by probably 80-90%) so yeah. I feel it would not be in my best interest to start another one.

And yet here I am, posting.

If you like sandbox/chose your own adventure type games, these are a part of that genre.

I ask that you give this a try when it comes out. You can thank me how great it is and how it has changed your view on fantasy forever afterwards. :2razz:

It's kinda FPS, most people play it in third person though and the developers even said that the experience was always optimized from a third person angle since Morrowind.

Oh great. You remind me of my nephew, who paid me back for leading him to "Lord Foul's Bane" by introducing me to RPG's. First ever was the old NES Final Fantasy. /sigh
