Has anyone played it? it is basically supposed to be skyrim with the dlc that is remastered for consoles to bring it to pc level graphics, rather than a stepdown. I have thought about buying it, but from what I read the xbox one version allows mods like steam does, while the ps4 version blocks mods.

There is also a steam special edition but I have no clue what makes it different, since the pc version never needed remastering.

PS4 is in the middle of getting an upgrade for the mods. They negotiated it with Sony.

I have the PC version. I never had much luck graphically modding the PC version because of constant crash-to-desktops, so this update is practically a revelation in most aspects. Even if places seem familiar, for some reason they just feel unvisited, because everything was grey and dull.

I have seen some amazing graphics unmodded on the pc version, but the remastered version I believe is not new graphics, just to the max pc graphics settings in hd, rather than the dumbed down choppy graphics the ps3 and xbox 360 got. The pc version though the exact graphics card seemed to make a difference, since the pc version was written for a mass of cards, and optimised for very few.

If you launch a vanilla copy of Skyrim at ultra and then throw on Special Edition at even 1080p on the same, it's a fairly nice upgrade. I'm currently doing 4k DSR on a 1080p screen with a 980gtx. It's mostly very very nice, but occasionally I am getting crashes because of that.

I am downloading the game on my xbox now and I am going to test, early reading says it is just bumped up to pc standards, while others are saying and showing they retextured the whole game with hd textures, use god rays and dynamic field of vision. I am assuming the pc special edition is the same thing.

Later today I will get to see what they really changed on it, and hopefully bethesda started subsidizing arrow to knee removal clinics, tired of hearing those guards whine about it.

They improved many of most of the textures, but I would say there is a lot of room for improvement. Take the ground for example. It certainly looks nicer than 2011 vanilla skyrim, but it's clearly not a 2k texture.

Texture mods will just take it where the game needs to be. That's where the 64 bit comes in handy.

I've tried to play Skyrim twice and just can't get into it at all. The control scheme and interface just seem so clumsy. The two-slot combat setup is highly limiting, why can't I just have a hotbar for spells like every other freaking RPG on the planet? Can't hotkey potions? The ****?

And then I start playing and within a few minutes am encountering NPCs who clearly had the same voice actor, who didn't even bother trying to come up with different voices for different characters. And it's not good voice acting either.

The game looks pretty, sure. But man, it's just not grabbing my attention.

You should get the PC version, if you really want good access to the best mods.
Xbone and PS4 mods will be limited and won't have the option to use script extenders, nor any other 3rd party programs that can greatly enhance the game.
Mostly, you'll be left with cosmetic mods, through the ****ty Bethesda website.

A lot of the better PC modders refuse to upload to Bethesda site, because they're incredibly slow to crack down on mod piracy and they don't punish the offenders.

The remastered pc version is likely to be more stable, like FO4, which has worked swimmingly well with mods.
