Why must PC Games be linked to STEAM?

I flippin love steam, not only do they offer significant discounts regularly on major titles. I can never lose or damage my games. Each game they offer has its own community you can access in game via steam overlay with a decent voice chat. You can create your own mods and offer them on workshops for a lot of games. Civ V alone you have thousands of user created mods in the workshop to extend or tweak your game play. All free. Not only that the discussion threads usually offer better support than the software company themselves. Now they offer refunds on titles your not happy with after 2 weeks, as long as you have no more than 2 hours play time. The Steam server will backup your save games, so you can install lesser played games to make room. And steam will auto-update your games if you don't go offline mode. And if you want a game and don't want full price put it on your wishlist, Steam will email you when its on sale. Its great. And some of the early access is hit or miss, I got burned but also have found a few gems. Like Empyrion Galactic Survival, got it in early access and it was super sweet. And now its in Beta and is even better.
