Just a heads up. Mixamo has joined Adobe, and has released their Fuse application for free. It allows you to create custom characters and animate them pretty easily. You can pull features of their prefab characters to match your tastes.

I made this Buddha Cop pretty quickly... although I used an external app to transform the prefab to this extent.

All the animations for Mixamo/Adobe are currently free, so you can have a lot of fun.

Here's a sample animation (breakdancing). I just screen captured the preview, this is not an optimized animation.

What do you do with these characters?

Depends. The Fuse app allows for characters to be directly uploaded to Mixamo's rigging system for animation purposes. Since these characters have a low polygon count (10k or so), they can be used quite efficiently in games.

I do 3D professionally, so it can be a useful alternative to rigging manually and/or creating characters from scratch.

For non-professionals, it's basically just for play.

Yep, looks pretty intimidating. I am far from computer or animation whiz. Just wondering if you did stuff with the characters, like making stories or something.

Yes, you can make stories with them. If you import the characters into Unity (or an alternative engine), you can create interactive books, in addition to games. There are not a lot of 3D books, but it's something on my radar.

That is really neat. Sounds like fun.

It's fun but challenging. I've been at it for about 3-4 years, and I'm just getting into animation. I haven't even touched coding (which is bringing all the elements of your 3D into a finished product).

Many 3D engines allows developers to makes a certain amount of money (~100k) before paying fees on their software, which has really opened up opportunities for independent companies.

Wow, that is neat. You get to make a bunch of money and do something creative at the same time. What a bonus. I wish creativity paid better. It would be wonderful to be able to pay the bills by doing something I loved like tapping creativity. I used to write a lot, and I love acting, but those things really take a back seat to all the boring "important" bill-paying garbage the "real world" demands of us all. So disappointing.

Keep it up and enjoy it!

As a freelancer I don't make much money, and there are almost zero 3D opportunities locally. IMO, you should do what you want to do because you enjoy it. If you make a lot of money, that's a bonus, but there's a lot to be said for going to work every day and loving it.

Keep your chin up and you'll get there.
