This actually looks really damn good so far. I'll definitely have to upgrade my machine (and I'll certainly pay attention to the reviews) before I decide whether to buy it or not, but it seems promising so far.

More so than the actual game, I think I'm excited about the modding opportunities this opens up. The introduction of flying units makes a whole range of things possible (modern warfare or sci-fi mods, for example) which simply couldn't have been done in the past.

Wow, that does look very cool! Been a huge fan of the Total War series!

Tim-

I wish I could run it.

But I have Shogun 2 and I really struggled to get it going smooth.

Yeah, I got my present computer back in 2012. It can just barely run Shogun at the highest settings, though it does so with some frame rate drop. Rome 2 ran like Hell on anything past low-medium settings, however, (and even then, made my computer heat up like a furnace) so I had to just give up on playing it entirely.

I'm not even going to try this latest game until I upgrade.

Total War Games are just such system killers and it's really nothing even to do with your GPU, it's all about the CPU.

Even on Rome Total War with my decent system in 2015, the processor just peaces out as soon as there's too much going on on the battlefield.

Love the total war series. Played empire just the other day and loved it. I was wondering why they hadn't made one of these yet. Warhammer is a tabletop game. Perfect for the total war series. Total war would be great for a lot of games actually...including Star Wars lol. Glad to see other fans though :)

Empire, Napoleon and Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai (that featured gattling gun unit) was on the fence with this but I think the total war series engine wouldn't work well with units with rates of fire that are just too high.

The engine is made for more set piece projectile units such as Musketmen, archers, cannons, gattling gun units being a decent exception because it's a slow moving, small, very immobile unit.

Star Wars would be a tricky one to get right on that engine.

They have mods for it. The trick would be, as you said, RoF. They would have to improve speed and such. Reduce unit numbers or something like that maybe? It would require a changing of the basic principles of movement for a game like that (make your unit go to a location and use cover and so on).

There are a lot of areas of combat to explore, potentially the First World War or the civil war. Lots of things going on at that time. Maybe even going back to the Bronze Age? Greeks fighting Persians? Idk. I guess they got a lot they can do. There just isn't much they can expand on once they get the combat correct. Ya know?

Civil war would definitely work.

There are work arounds and I'll watch some videos when I get home but I'd imagine it's hard to re-engineer it for run and gun High Rate of Fire units such as Stormtroopers.

A better game to actually re-engineer for that purpose would be Company of Heroes, because the mechanics such as cover and small units are so well optimized, now that would be something!

I'm going to need to look that up. I haven't heard of it.

True. I'd still like to take a crack at this latest one with a beast gaming rig like an Alienware 18, however.

Well, there are "skirmish" units with small troop numbers and loose formations in the game already which kind of work for that purpose. They don't really maneuver or take cover like modern infantry would, however, and controlling an entire battlefield full of them would simply be a pain.

Ideally, the game would need an engine more like "Men of War: Assault Squad," or something along those lines.

Civil war would definitely work.

There are actually mods for basically all of these concepts already.

American Civil War: Brother vs Brother

The Great War

Say what you will about the developer. TW's modding community has pretty much always been top notch.

Yeah I was just looking at some of these.

My motto when it comes to modding and tools provided to players to build their own levels etc. is the following:

"Never underestimate the player".

Because they will take your game and do incredible things you never dreamed of with it, often surpassing the developers with quality.

Same with trying to force certain things on PC Gamers such as the famous EA Sim City debacle, "You can't play it offline" within days that turned out to be nonsense because they didn't follow that simple motto.

Well'p! I finally got that new Alienware laptop I ordered AGES ago a few weeks back. I figured I might as well test it out with a new game, and this one seemed good as any.

I've gotta say... While the computer works great, I am really kind of disappointed with Warhammer Total War. In spite of being an absolute system hog (even my new computer starts to slow down a little bit during big battles on the highest settings), the graphics really don't look all that great. The textures aren't very sharp at all; everything almost looks like it was made of playdoh. I'd honestly say 2012's Rome 2 TW looked better.

The unit models also seem kind of generic and lazy to say the least, given how much variety exists in the tabletop models.

The balancing is a bit of a mess as well. I really haven't a clue how to effectively use any of these new giant or supernatural units, and some of the armies seem to be at an inherent disadvantage to others, due to their lack of ranged units, or other things of that nature.

The game also seems like a bit of a step backwards in terms of features and gameplay. Most of the unit special abilities are gone, as is any sort of focus on naval battles, or naval combined arms. They also got rid of most of the formation controls that could be used to more precisely arrange your units, and have been in the series since Empire TW.

Overall, just very, VERY, "meh." There's a Russian-made Warhammer mod for Medieval 2 Total War that is lightyears beyond anything this has to offer.
