Maybe this is a dumb question but I'm having a new computer built and there are several games I own that I want to transfer to the new machine. I know I can just install the games from a disk but some of the content was purchased digitally and I have no idea where those files may have gone. In particular I have FO3 with all the DLC's and would love to move that over. Can I just do a fresh install and then copy over the game Data folder with all the extra content?

Do you have steam? If not, I would back up all of the folders and prepare to move them over.

Agreed on the Steam part, or Origin (Battlefield series, some Sims games.) What are the games? It will help us advise you (and we promise not to laugh if one of them is Hello Kitty.)

FO3 is on a disk and the DLC was a digital purchase through Bethesda. I'm not worried about any Steam games because those will just reinstall straight up and I can move the saves if I want to. I don't think there's anything else I'll have an issue with.

If it was steam, no worries....just go to steam and reinstall

You should be fine (I've done it before), the DLCs are just .esm files and should transfer regardless, if not just download them and they should work. Don't forget your save games.

If memory serves, Fallout 3 has the downloaded content in a separated folder.

Check...

\<user profile name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC

(or something similar based on your old PC's OS.)

You may have to copy that folder into a location, install the game on a new machine, then place the files in the appropriate spot on the new PC (depending on OS and so forth.) It looks like the digital purchases can be saved this way but check their forums to verify before doing so. Another option is looking at the conditions of the purchase from Bethesda, they may or may not allow another download of prior purchased content assuming it is still available.

you can download non steam games into your library

i have done so with three games

then you can reload from their game library with zero issue

I had some troubles with that years ago on an old Call of Duty game, it took time to repair but in the end I kind of *made it work* overwriting a few files with saved data.

ny newest issue

i like some of the older game

windows 10 apparently doesnt like then

not sure if it is the updated direct x files, or what....

but two of my older games no longer work (the newer version do, but not the classic versions)

It looks like all the DLC is the game data folder. Worst case scenario I figure I can just rebuy the game on Steam.

Sorry to hear that my friend, wish I had better advice for you...

How about some kind of HD mirroring software?
I had no idea people still play games on computers. Brings me back to the days of Duke Nuke'm 3D. :shoot

Steam. Gotta get steam man.

I've got Steam and will rebuy a game if necessary but my problem is that I purchased FO3 on a disk and then added the DLC via download. I'm not sure how to move that package to a new PC.

My initial thought was to just do a fresh install of the base game and then replace the Data file in the new game with the one I'll copy from the other PC. I'm just looking for advice as to whether that will work or not.

Running as an administrator sometimes fixes older software, as does the compatibility troubleshooter. (right click on the shortcut or executable)

Some older software might depend on windows system files that simply don't exist anymore, at which point you're generally out of luck.

You used some kind of account or login to purchase the DLC and that should let you redownload the DLC. Decent software companies will have this process automated but worst case you can call their customer support, I should think.

i love my epic games of civ 5 on level 5 difficulty....takes me 10-15 hours of game time to finish it

i love majesty 2....i have all four subgames, and replay them every couple of years

i love masters of orion....again the replay is awesome

for the heavy strat games, a computer is the only way to go
