I don't really have a working laptop right now. I don't need one. My next computer will be a desktop (of which I will HAVE to have Microsoft (Windows) because I want to play games.

BUT...I will never buy another Microsoft laptop. Additionally...I will do my best to never own a single Microsoft office product (PowerPoint, exel, word...I'm looking at you). Why? It is a rip off. The laptops are unstable and last 2 years. They want me to pay a subscription for all that crap? And the only thing holding me back from buying a Mac desktop is that they don't play games well (get off your ass Mac...there is huge market for a competitor who kicks Microsoft in the teeth for being such jerks).

Does anyone else hate Microsoft? Btw this is all spurred from using my girlfriends MacBook Air she got.

But seriously. No viruses. No irritating BS crap I have to constantly delete with subscriptions to anti virus programs (which probably made the damn viruses in the first place...because they aren't making money off me by annoying the hell out of me).

You do know only Windows is made by Microsoft right, the actual computer is made by a different company. You should just try a different company or since you want a desktop build it yourself. Office is the standard for the the things it does and is by far the best so good luck with that. I would also suggest getting a proper anti-virus like ESET as Macs also get viruses.

Microsoft doesn't manufacture laptops, they primarily make software. The actual manufacturer you're going with probably sucks balls (Dell, HP?) And yes if you'll be gaming you're way better off with a desktop. But there are good laptop manufacturers out there that aren't Apple. The best brands out there at the moment are ASUS and Lenovo.

I have heard that linux (ubuntu) is very stable, and they don't get hit with a lot of viruses. But of course they're not Windows, and Windows has the apps, but Ubuntu has a lot of free software. I once had a temp job at Microsoft, and everybody who was working for the staffing agency were chatting among themselves and the topic was how bad Microsoft was. Before long, someone from Microsoft told us not to talk about them. If we wanted to quit, then walk out the door, but if you wanted to work, then just shut up about Microsoft.

8.1 comes with so many pre-installed apps that it feels like adware. My biggest complaint is that there are some programs that once you open them, there is no way to close them easily--like one of the calculators. The only way I can get the full screen one to close is to go to the start button and search for something so it will give me the bar on the bottom back so I can close the calculator from it. There is no way to exit out of it I can find otherwise and even hitting the windows button when that thing is open won't get me anywhere.

Security through scarcity. Most people use windows. So it only makes sense for all those basement dwelling nerds to hack windows instead of mac or linux.

You really have to try to get a virus on a Mac though. Like you have to actually allow something to be downloaded (to my knowledge).

But also it doesn't matter. Microsoft has edited windows to a nearly useless hunk of crap. I like 7. Why change the layout people have been using for 20 freakin years? Or is it closer to 30 now? Plus you can get converted for .doc so it doesn't matter there either. I'm not paying for something that should COME standard.

If you still have win7 stick with it. If you dont play games then use linux- thats even safer than a mac in terms of getting hit by viruses.

Anti-trust Litigation. MSFT has been the subject of it since the early 90's. They just won a 10 year long case over whether or not they were blocking out competition from Wordperfect by delaying giving them access to windows to make it more functional. If Word were standard package software on windows, they would have been back in the same boat they were in with netscape suing them over explorer being a standard program on windows. I am convinced in my heart that the only reason Gates saved Apple was so they would have a competitor to help avoid more lawsuits like these. But for antitrust threats, MSFT would be the only game in town across the board by now.

That is how viruses work on Windows or OSX, the reasons Macs get less is because less viruses are made for them but that is changing. Then get Windows 7 (you can still buy it) or wait for Windows 10 but any version you buy now can upgrade to it for free in the future. MS Office is the standard even on Macs, it is powerful software but if you really hate it there are free alternatives bu they do not work nearly as well.

i like both.

that being said, i just purchased a MacBook Pro, and i really dig it so far. OS is pretty straightforward, intuitive, and very fast. flash hard drive boots up almost instantly, and the build is really good. battery and display are top notch, also.

i will say that my Windows 7 machine is still doing pretty well after five years. only the battery needs replaced. i'm going to keep it long term to burn CDs, and for other applications that are more Windows specific.

my Lenovo machine at work is a great laptop. runs Windows 7. i have a little experience with 8; my parents bought a laptop that runs it. i still like 7 better, but i didn't get enough of a chance to work with 8 to really make an assessment. 10 will probably kick ass, judging by how much 7 improved on Vista. still, i'm mostly interested in the Mac right now because it's fun to learn a new OS.

Windows 8 REALLY sucks and we literally have to use old XP laptops to work with Windows 8 because the search feature on Windows 8 is essentially non-existent.

What? The search feature in Windows 8 is superior to Linux and OSX. Finding files is damn easy..

Keep your Windows computer to play your games. For everything else if you want a stable laptop and not worry about viruses and such get a Chromebook. They're cheap, they're stable as hell, and they are virus free.

But for gaming, they suck.

the interface changed and it has thrown people.

Actually it has not. It has been expanded at best.

If you are fully updated to Windows 8.1, then the "traditional" search icon is there, not that it is needed since you can start searching by just start typing.. a feature that was present in Windows 8 as well.

Also in File Explorer there have been no changes. The search box is where it always has been.

On top of that the search function on the start menu now includes the internet as well as all files and even in apps. So type Iron Maiden and it will find all your documents, music and movies on your machine plus do a search on the internet for you.. and in your apps of course.

LINUX

Try Linux Mint: Main Page - Linux Mint

#1) It's free - always (this is true for many Linux distros)
#2) You can burn a CD and boot to it so you can try it without installing it (this is true for many Linux distros)
#3) You can install it without over-writing anything else - dual boot - (this is true for many Linux distros)
#4) Comes with free alternatives to Word, Powerpoint, Excel... (this is true for many Linux distros)
#5) Easy to use and get started (this is true for many Linux distros)
#6) Did I mention it's FREE
#7) No need for virus or malware protection (this is true for many Linux distros)

The interface for the XP search function is markedly different than that of Win8.
Err there is 14 years difference. That's like saying a modern day car is bad because it is different than the Ford model T.

Searching for files on XP and Windows 8 is not that different especially in File Explorer. The search box is in the same place. Hell File Explorer has not changed that much other than a few new functions have been added and we have the ribbon interface since Vista.

Windows 8 has by far the best search function I have used... superior to Linux and OSX. Hell Apple basically stolen the functions for their new search thingy.

So why were you trying to make the case that the interface had not changed?
I never said that the Win8 interface is bad.

I have heard that the difference between the two interfaces is like the difference between a modern car and a Ford model T.

Give Linux a shot. I recommend Linux Mint main release. Very stable, no viruses, fast, no bloatware, and will double the life of your laptop due to much lower resource usage. Takes 10 minutes to install, fully graphical -- a kid could do it.

Also, it uses mostly or entirely open source software. Mac still uses some Microsoft software. Linux pretty much can't even if it wanted to, so pretty much all of it is open source. I actually really prefer the office suite on Linux (Libre Office).

Also, I am not convinced that Macs have so much better lifespans. My last experience with Macs was in my entire department dropping them en masse because of problems, and my layout editor having to send hers in 3 times over the course of 2 years for manufacturing flaws. Macs have some of the most severe planned obsolecence in the industry, and you'll pay for it eventually.

I really think buying a decent PC -- which is much cheaper than a Mac even at the luxury end -- and putting Linux on it is the best way to get longevity. For inexpensive and good, check out Asus. For frickin' awesome but more expensive, look at ThinkPad and Fujitsu.

I've had laptops last me years and years with that combination, depite being dropped down stairs, on concrete, having stuff spilled on them... I'm not kind to my electronics. Switching a wheezing PC from Windows to Linux is such a huge improvement that it feels like having a whole new computer.

if your laptops are breaking/unstable after two years its operator error or the the laptop, not windows

I use my laptop as a media player. Chrome books don't let me use DVDs :)
