Hey, so my suggestion is to NOT do it without a PC.
Why?

Because you risk screwing it up and breaking your phone completely. However.

Gaining root access is something that only experienced users should attempt to do and you should also check to see if it is legal or not. But baring that legal jibber-jabber aside that in reality doesn't mean anything, you should get software to do it for you like Framaroot. None of that hardware-glitching thing to "trick" the android.

My goal is to remove the high-volume warning, seen here:

The gods of technology require that I go through these complicated rituals to banish the Warning demon of High-Volume. If you have a blasphemous easy way to do it, I would tithe handsomely to your temple if you could teach me your ways, oh master.

On a related note I would also like the Confirm Navigation box removed from Windows, but I know less than nothing about Java to do it.

I haven't got a high volume warning in years...

This s small bluetooth device. I wear polo shirts and dockers as the department computer geek and I actually wear it under my shirt at work. Clip the unit near the collar buttons such that it's there but pretty much can't be seen and the buds drap around my neck. The device has a built in mic and when a call comes in just push the circular button on the flat surface near the headphone jack to answer the call. I use it as a media streamer and the battery last pretty much all day on a single charge. I also have a Sprint unlimited data plan and use it to stream media while working at my desk. Because I'm on bluetooth I can walk around and interact with other people, go to the printer, etc. without having to remember to grab my phone and without looking like a dork having a headphone cord hanging to the phone.

I typically just use the left bud when at work, when not needed I just pop it out and slide it under the shirt. As I said if I get a call and the bud is in, all I need to do is tap a button on the unit, if the bud isn't in just reach into my color - pop it in - and hit the button.

Since I don't change the volume on the phone because the volume adjust is on the unit, I don't get he warning.

Oh ya - great when I'm out "shopping" with the wife. CNN, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, etc., etc. - for the win.

I wear these so I can hear over the machinery:

Also, those look like ear buds, and I'm sure they don't function as ear protection, so my supervisor would have me remove them anyway. What I wear do function as hearing protection so even though there's a 'no headphones' policy (made because people replace ear protection with ear buds) my boss looks the other way.

I am not looking for new headphones. I am trying to successfully Root my phone so I can remove an unnecessary high-volume warning. I do not max out the volume, either. My comfort setting is a notch or two above the warning, which is set at 60% volume. Please confine your responses to the initial conditions of OP or kindly do not post at all.

Generally speaking I do advise you to always have a backup of your phone on your PC to make sure you don't screw it up.

Well yeah, so this is using Xposed rooting framework, I only ever used Framaroot.

Generally speaking I'm pretty sure someone coded a removal for confirm navigation on the internet, I suggest browsing github since that's where you will most likely find it. Or indeed, nobody may have coded that because nobody found it distressing. Sorry I can't be for much help. Just be cautionary.

My phone doesn't talk to my PC so that's not an option.

I've given up on Xposed because it isn't listed in the Google Play Store, at least not anymore. I would be happy to try a similar program.

My quest continues :)

I did discover a work-around the volume warning. Hold the volume-up key until and as the warning displays, keep holding it and tap "ok". The warning will not appear again until you restart your device.

...but it will appear again after the device is restarted, so I still need a way to remove it from existence.

Throughout the day I need to stop and talk to people. No one notices (or at least I haven't noticed them noticing) when I lower the volume of my phone in the front pocket. When I want to raise the volume again I'd like to be able to to just hold the volume-up button, but this warning keeps getting in the way. To dismiss the warning I have to take me phone out of my pocket, which lets everyone see that I have a phone despite the no cell-phone policy.

And before everyone gets in a huff about respecting the employer's policies, everyone has a cell phone despite the policy, even the supers and managers, and there is a very big "just don't make it my problem" unwritten rule.

My efforts are to be sure it never becomes my employer's problem.

Sorry about that. Thought you were looking for alternatives which is what I was providing. Using a bluetooth receiver the volume control is on the bluetooth and you don't ever have to take your cell phone out of your pocket and it works with any headphones that use the standard 3.5mm phone jack. There is an independent volume control on the receiver. You can use the headphones you mentioned just fine.

Hmmm, I can help you with the PC not recognizing android problem.

Can you tell me if you tried replacing the cable or sticking it into a different USB drive.
That is just to make sure the problem isn't hardware.

If you did all that, then did u download for the computer, the android driver as it were ,for your phone. U said u had a samsung.
Download Center: Download Software, Firmware, Drivers & Manuals | Samsung

Hope this helps.

That and a lot more....

  • Using different USB cables, different USB ports.
  • Removing the phone battery & SIM card, let sit for a minute, put it back together and restart.
  • Made sure MTP on phone is selected, Kies 3.0 on laptop updated and running. Kies doesn't see my phone or recognize "SCH-I535" as a model name for downloading firmware.
  • Called *#0808# and a couple other codes attempting to access USB menu, codes didn't do anything at all.
  • Tried to reboot in Download Mode, but phone reboots into SafeMode instead up to the first pin menu to unlock encrypted device, after pin is entered the phone reboots normally.
  • Entered Developer Mode and enabled USB Debugging & Accept Unknown Sources. Upon reboot of both PC and phone, PC sees a USB device it doesn't recognize, and nothing happens. USB Debugging doesn't see new Samsung drivers on PC.

I'm finally coming around to the fact that I'm just going to have to decrypt the phone in order to root it....but will my PC see it if I re-encrypt it?

Well, you have nothing to lose so... go for it.
That's not entirely true. You can choose to live with a half-useful phone or go for the full prize but risk losing your phone, at least for a little while (may have to take it to a shop so that they can reboot it if you screw up the settings).

All this because of a high-volume warning that shouldn't be there in the first place.

While I dont disagree.... you do realize that it is only there because of idiot Americans suing companies due to hearing loss right?

I would save the world from idiot's lawsuits but I don't have a cape. What I do have is a phone with a high-volume warning. The world is a lost cause, but there's still hope for my phone.

Just so you know.. it is an Android feature, as I also have it on my Nexus 5 with Lollipop installed and had it with Kitkat. iOS also has if I remember right and I know Windows Phone also has it.
