My two sons and I are gamers. We've been playing computer games individually and together for almost 15 years. But all three of us have been able to keep things in perspective. Jobs, education, social life, etc, haven't suffered. But this isn't the case for all gamers. Here is an example of the DARK SIDE of gaming.

To be fair, I strongly suspect that was staged.

Shredding the video games with a lawnmower might have been a bit over the top, but from judging from his reaction it was probably highly necessary. Not even like this was some 10 year old with a little bit of an addiction. This was an adult graduated from college, still living with his parents, and without a job. I probably would have done the same thing.

Hmm....someone seems to be destined for the rubber room.

Somebody needs to get laid... real bad.

Only just a little staged. I suspect that's kinda of like being a little pregnant.

I had a similar conversation with my dad when I was 14.

"Dad, can you get me X-Wing! I really want to play it"
"Get a job, you can pay for it yourself"

So I went to McDonald's and got a job.

From the look of things he'd complain about that too!

His personality and immaturity would be a hindrance as well. I don't understand these parents, coddle and give him everything, let him become a recluse with his games, let the games become his whole world and then finally decide some tuff love is in order.

I do question whether the video is real though, seems so far out there as to not be real.

teeheeheee, console games? With online storage I can back up all my games on the internet and instantly download in any computer for free even if it's just temporarily. Hell some games you can just go to the website and download and start playing in 20 minutes.

(Sidenote) the crybaby probably staged this, if not, he is an inferior subhuman whose genes must never be passed on.

Staged, but youth can get this attached. Like anything, you need balance. Shredding games, however, just wasted money that could have been had if they would have been sold off.

It's also worth noting that he seems to be under the impression that he was going to make a living playing those games (as a reviewer, I'd assume?).

He's probably wrong, of course. However, if we take the video at face value, it's not like he was completely unjustified in his reaction.

He was just kind of a whiny bitch about it.

It is not the dark side of gaming, it is the dark side of obsessive and compulsive behavior.

Professional gaming for certain games is very profitable. Streaming with Twitch allows one to receive donations and subscriptions which depending on the popularity of the player means good cash. On top of streaming are the professional tournaments usually hosted by companies like the gaming companies (Blizzard for example holds WCS) or red bull and have cash prices in the tens of thousands for the top players. Between these two a professional gamer can make some good cash, and the video game world is only expanding, and as such, the prizes get bigger and bigger as viewership gets bigger.

Hell some moron (Summit1G) who streams DayZ received over $2,000 dollars in donations from a singular random guy from who knows where.

We finally live in a world where video games are popular enough to be treated like sports. Players make money, reviewers are hardly the only ones able to profit from actually playing video games all day.

All of this being said...

I sincerely doubt this guy would have ever been a professional gamer (since every pro gamer starts in the professional scene at ages as young as 16). The dedication required is horrendous (you literally practice the same amount as normal people work. Approx. 7-10 hours as some gamers say) and not to mention one has to be proactive in doing things like marketing one's self and contacting the right people and such.

Seems pretty blatantly fake. And not even all that good of a fake. Instead of standing there yelling at his dad for a couple minutes, he could have been picking the games up. Or just sat down on the pile so dad couldn't run them over.

I'm sure there are kids that are this obsessed with video games though, and parents who are psychotic enough to do something like this.

If you have to resort to extreme measures like that to modify your kid's behavior, it's because you already screwed up at some point.

Funny how people are only focused on how much of a psychotic manchild the son is.

Tough love. Kid is better off without them than thinking he is going pro as a video game player

Destroying hundreds of dollars of the kid's property in a temper tantrum isn't "tough love", it's juvenile grandstanding.

Like father like son. They both seem like psychopaths.
