I recently started making mods for one of my favorite game series (TW).

Mainly what I am doing for now is retexturing and other minor stuff. I am so to speak learning step by step and getting better at what I am doing from one day to another.

After I am done with TW I might go to doing some modding with Skyrim.

I am suprised at how easy this is more or less. 2-4 hours of active learning and you have made a giant step forward.

My biggest project so far has been a Persian reskin of the Satrapy factions in Rome 2:

The Persians are coming! (finished)

And my most popular mod is the creation of some new Warelephants for the Greek Seleucid Successor Kingdome:

Right now I am spending my time with an ancient India project and a retexture of Bactria.

Possibly I may create a emergent ancient jewish faction if I can figure out how to edit startpositions, emplems and factions.

Do you create mods aswell?

Do you have any tips on texturing?

I loved modding and mapping. I was all over the game Unreal Tournament for years (2004). Unfortunately: the communities have sort of dissolved, it's a 10 year old game (gesus). I don't think any of my maps exist online anymore and I don't have them backed up, either.

But it was so much fun. I loved creating my own maps and statics, dynamic lighting, etc. Gimp was great for this. Architecture was fun. Sounds were even more fun to tinker with.

Ahhh - good time good times.

Your stuff looks good, awesome :)

Those look pretty cool.

Texturing involves art, and I have no talent that direction. I do play around some with Unreal Engine, making maps and doing some scripting. If you want to do more than textures, Unreal Engine is a great thing to learn.

Keep up the good work!

It's an activity that I'd love to get into but haven't. I've spent a little while messing with the mod program that was available with Oblivion but never followed up on it.

UT maps are not in demand, but the Unreal Engine is the most used game engine these days no think.

The mods are totally unfair, it's a conspiracy against my lean and even me personally!!11!!

:)

Absolutely. It's sturdy. The refresh capabilities, generation composite and static buffers were advanced and fluid. For the sheer heft of the gaming environment most people experienced very few issues. The platform made waves when it was first out.

The easy design user interface of the editor made it possible for a large number of people to take it on and learn it which increased its popularity.

And it's fun to have been so into the modding for it: I can still recognize game skins and composites and I know what package they originally came from. "That's from Abaddon." and so on. It's like an egg hunt.

Hope this works...

Here is embed version now that I am at comp:

Also, for any one interested, can get Unreal Engine 3 from here for free: UDK | Free Game Engine Download

Another free to use engine that is very popular: Crytek | MyCryENGINE

OK...that was all fascinating but it leads me to believe that the "engine" is just the mechanism that determines how images are rendered. If I have one of these "engine's" installed I still need to use something else to create the "stuff" I want to have rendered and then something else to tell the "stuff" what to do and when to do it...right?

Depends on what you want to do. Sorry I cannot be more specific, but there is a whole lot of things you can do, and some things you do need other things for. It is far more than just rendering though. Oh so much more. It is a level editor, it is a high power scripting language, it does rendering and AI work. You can modify with C++(or possibly other languages, not sure) and import 3d meshes and textures from most 3d programs(Blender for example is free and pretty powerful). If you have any interest in level design or game design, pick up Unreal Engine 3...it is free, the worst you are out is some time. If you want to do 3d modeling and graphics. Blender or sketchup are both free. Blender alot more powerful, sketchup alot easier to use(and in both cases, when I say alot, I am not overstating it...a whole lot different).

Did that answer your question or did I fail to understand?

That was helpful. I'll bookmark those links so I can check them out when I have more time.

Funny how this stuff gets more interesting for me during my busiest work periods:doh

Looks cool. Currently playing Rome 2 TW so I might use it!

Have you done any more you can show us?

I am currently working on a very big project. But if you want I can show it here.

It is up to you of course. I would certainly be interested in it, but if you are not comfortable showing off the work, or showing it off yet, don't worry about it. Also, what software do you use when you make these?

Why can't DP look more like that website??

I hand code all mine, don't you? :2razz:

Go right ahead. I'm curious to see it.

I am making a reskin of each and every single faction in the game. I will start in the east with Bactria and work myself to the West into Spain. My final goal is to make each faction of the game as unique as I possibly can. Problem is that alot of people would like such mods to be historicaly accurate. So I had to get well over 200 books on ancient era warfare aswell as documents on archeological excavations. Currently I am almoust finished with the partly Indian/Afghan/Persian/Greek kingdome of Bactria and will publish it soon.

As a result of working on Bactria I managed to create even more Indian skins, so I might make a unit pack of Indian merceneries.

I was recruited by magnar to work on his giant and amazing magnar mod project as a texture creator, so I will have to spend alot of time with his mods aswell. Currently I am making new deer, wil boar, goat, sheep and fox pelts for germanic units. Aswell as new skin textures with combat scars and germanic war paint. All of which will be used in magnar mod.

Unfortunatly things are going rather slow right now. I intended to finish 2 weeks after I started on this project. Now I have been working on it for a month. I am kind of falling into a circle of over - perfection. As soon as I see that something could be a little bit better, I start working on it again.

By all means, take your time. I'm personally a sucker for historical realism mods; the more detailed, the better.

I'd simply recommend trying to keep a more reasonable time scale than these freaking guys.

TW Center -Europa Barbarorum II

They've been working on that damn thing since before Empire came out, and they're only now getting around to releasing an alpha.

Seriously...

I am not working on this alone, meaning that there is someone pushing me towards release.

So at best it will take 3 months and I am going to release each part seperatly.
