Next Gen X Box Announced, Sony Stock Skyrockets

Sorry but the gaming console has been dieing a slow death for years and any new console needs to be more. Look at the new Wii... total flop, and that is a pure gaming console.

No...just. Just no.

First, it wasn't/isn't a "pure gaming" console. Their "Mii"-centric social networking program, built in browser, the TVii interface, netflix/amazon/hulu, google maps, and others are all non-game related things that were promoted about the device.

Second, they added on an additional perephial that was less than thrilling to the actual "pure gaming" crowd and that many developers felt overly burdened with trying to design additional features for.

Third, the Wii had been on a rather downward slope in terms of sale and mindshare by the time hte Wii U came out. The low price of the console, mixed with the amazingly "casual gamer" friendly focus of it, made it an AMAZINGLY fast selling console. However, this also caused a massive saturation of the market in terms of the "casual gamer" crowd. And the "casual gamer" crowd are less likely to purchase a new system just for some kind of tech bump when they're old one still works fine...especially when the public perception was that the "Wii U" was largely different only because it had a tablet like controller.

Fourth, the Wii U TRIED to make it seem like it was going to be friendly to "gamers". The Wii, largely, was not. While the first party Nintendo games were great, the amount of third party games for it was lacking OR were gimped compared to their XBox and PS3 brethren. One of the biggest selling games, Madden, is a wonderful example of this issue. Nintendo hoped to lure "gamers" back into the fold, but it was a "too little, too late". The next gen XBox and PS3 were around the corner, and the jumps made by Nintendo in specs were expected to yet again lag behind the other two consoles in the generation. Sure enough, some of the key development houses...like EA...are basically no longer planning their top end type of games for the Wii U.

The Wii U's failure was a whole giant mix of bad....from an expensive perephial that bogged down developers and didn't entice customers, to an over saturated market for one of their key demagraphics, to having lost/never regained the confidence of the "gamer" community. It hasn't floundered because it was a "pure gaming console".

That said, I understand Microsofts focus on the entertainment side of things with this launch. You DO need to attract more than just "gamers" and even beyond that, "gamers" are more and more expecting some of these social functions. But the big reason I understand it is that E3 is just around hte corner, and it makes sense that they're saving the GAMES portion of things for there. That allows them to have a steady stream of news coverage about the device rather than blowing their load right at the start.

Though I wish Microsoft hadn't half assed it and actually built, essentially, a cable box into the Xbox instead of trying to use it to just overlay everything over your cable boxes info...thus making it almost more of a hassle to use in the end.

No there isn't. No Zelda, no Metroid, no proper Mario, and no exclusive third party games worth a damn. No reason to buy the console on the game front.

That's one of the things that definitely helped the Wii garner attention with the "gaming" crowd at the start.

Zelda as a launch title. Metriod and Mario Galaxy by year 2. Smash Bros and Kart by year 3.

The Wii U didn't launch with a next gen game of any of Nintendo's big franchises, which undoubtably hurt it. It's big push with "games" was reputting out big name games that had hit other systems or consoles much earlier but just never were able to be played on the Wii.

man, i am so out of the loop on new consoles. makes sense, because my last one was the first XBox, which i loved until i basically killed it by using it to play DVDs.

that being said, i read that if you want to borrow a game from a friend, you have to pay to play it, and that it might be close to the cost of buying the game. do gamers put up with that kind of **** now? seems like that would be a significant "**** you" point for me.

Halo was the only thing keeping me tied to the Xbox, and now I'm just going to switch over to PC.

I'm split. Most people will be talking about the gamer perspective, and since I am not much of one, I am more interested in the media portion, and despite what gamers think, this isn't necessarily a slam dunk just because Microsoft concentrated on it.

The first major disappointment is the really lackluster detail regarding how much requires an internet connection and/or an Xbox live subscription. This is what really pissed me off about the Xbox 360. I should not have to access the internet to play song files or movie files that are on my hard drive or flash drive. There is no excuse. There is damn no excuse to require individuals to subscribe to Xbox live in order to access their subscription services like Netflix or Hulu.

Sure, the used gaming market attack is completely undermining. Monetizing this is ridiculous.

I like the live tv and multitasking features. The problem is, I don't know if I would ever use it. You still have to have an external tuner, and I don't know if I want my cable pumped in through their system. The media industry is just too convinced that we want to share and discuss everything about a show or film over the internet with people we don't know or even those we do know. That's more irritating to me than anything. So we'll see. They say you don't need a net connection to do live tv, but you know, I'm happy that at least it doesn't seem to go down the familiar road of making you buy an Xbox live subscription to gain access to all of the material you're already paying for.

For a blu-ray player, we'll see. I'm sure it's not going to be an amazing player, but it's one nevertheless. I'm all for having an many blu-players in my house as I can get, but I'm hoping that they are vigilant with firmware upgrades. There's too many discs that do not play well or at all on blu-ray players outside of the Playstation 3.

It looks like they are finally hammering out the Kinect, but, I am not a fan of accidental changes due to physical movement. I don't want to get into a conversation with someone and then make a hand gesture, finding out that Kinect thinks I want it to do something.

Media codecs are another concern of mine. For the most part, Microsoft's codec support was abysmal, just god awful. The additional codec support packs always had file corruptions, I had to continuously download the same pack again and again in order to gain access to filetypes that were essentially the first-choice of music or video watchers. The Playstation 3 had almost no problems doing this. It was a far superior media device.

The Playstation 3's audio player was absolutely idiotic. It was inspired by the worst, most foolish tendencies of windows users and their infinity for folder navigation, mixed with the crazy lack of compatibility with iPods. You couldn't play your own music while playing a game! The 360 could at least organize the audio better,be able to play in the game, but it couldn't easily play codecs that Microsoft didn't like (in other words, anything that Microsoft doesn't produce-and what people are actually using). The 360's random function was just dumb. There is no excuse for a random/shuffle mode being stuck on a letter in the alphabet-calling that random playback.

Ah i'm the opposite. If i'm going to be buying one console over another and exclusive titles were the overriding factor I'd go with Microsoft. There are a couple Playstation titles that are decent (i.e. SOCOM US Navy Seals back when it was good). Also I play a little bit of EVE Online and DUST 514 is also exclusive on PS3.

The key thing to remember is that it's not the raw specs that matter, it's how each company/console implements their architecture and how efficiently they do it. What also really pissed me off about the Playstation 3 was that the majority of their titles - despite being in blu-ray format - are in 720p while xbox games using DVD discs are 1080p.

Pretty much my thoughts. Exclusive titles are going to be what grabs me. If I'm going for serious eye candy I'd just buy a new gaming computer.

Lets face it.. people are complaining about everything .. almost .. these days so Microsoft cant win.

Now had it been Apple who made this thing, then it would be "magical"..

No, people are complaining about those things that Microsoft does that warrant a complaint. Others are knee jerk defending Microsoft whatever they do. Here is a nice related thing for you to defend. have fun:

Microsoft’s new Kinect patent goes Big Brother, will spy on you for the MPAA | ExtremeTech

Microsoft has filed for a Kinect-related patent, and it’s a doozy of an application. The abstract describes a camera-based system that would monitor the number of viewers in a room and check to see if the number of occupants exceeded a certain threshold set by the content provider. If there are too many warm bodies present, the device owner would be prompted to purchase a license for a greater number of viewers.

No, really. It’s that blunt. From the abstract: “The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.”

What? No way! Only Apple can have Fan Bois, thus why they must be brought up and villianized even in a thread about a sector of the market they're not involved in. Gosh Redress, get up to speed on the realities of life from spain before you post such absurdities.

Apple fanbois are evil.

I am not a huge gamer and have old gen systems, but I must say that the Xbox One's conference was complete and utter crap. The goddamn thing looks like a VCR and apparently they are having added security with their games in which when you buy the game, you enter a confirmation code.

Also, this just in: No backwards compatibility (Xbox One will not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games | The Verge)

I thought you might find this funny

I'm a PlayStation guy. And yes, the PS4 stats look better for this reason alone: Backwards compatible with previous PS* games. Besides, the X-Box failure rate is alarming once you consider how much you're spending on the system + the amount of agitation that would come with having to ship off your X-Box that you spent several hundred dollars on for repairs as possibly soon as the first time you operate the machine. Out of the box failures are a failure on Microsoft, as are, failures within, I'd say, a two year period. I've had my PS3 since 2008. It is not perfect, but it has had no serious issues.

You must not have been around for the "disc read error" debacle with the PS2.

Please. Sony ****ed up on a lot of stuff, so did Microsoft. Apple tried to do it in the mid-90s, it failed, miserably. Right up there with the Newton and the Cube. Just because you're a fanboy doesn't mean you need to get all defensive.

Xbox One | Meet Xbox One - Xbox.com

Sounds impressive. Problem though, comparing to PS4, leaked(ie unofficial) specs:

PS4
・CPU: Jaguar 8 Core CPU @ 2.0GHz
・GPU: Radeon GPU @ 1.84TFLOPS
・Memory: 8GB GDDR5 @ 176GB/s
■Features:
・Backwards compatible with previous PS* games
・Can remote play on PSV
・PlayStation Eye
・Supposedly plays used games
・Est. price: $300-$500
・Has a Share button!
Xbox One
・CPU: Jaguar 8 Core CPU @ 1.6GHz
・GPU: D3D 11.1 GPU @ 1.2TFLOPS
・Memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 68GB/s
■Features:
・No backwards compatibility
・Now has Blu-ray & TV support, in the US at least
・Kinect
・Plays used games if you pay again
・Est. price: $300-$500
・Has Windows 8!

Not only does it look like the PS4 has better stats, but the fact that the Xbox will not be backwards compatible and that the XBox will not allow playing used games without paying a fee are both confirmed and significant.

Xbox 360 games won't work with the Xbox One | Reviews - Games and Gear - CNET Reviews
News: Microsoft confirms 'pre-owned fee' for Xbox One - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

The end result, after the announcement, Sony stock prices shot up, going from 20.97 to 22.91 in a couple hours. That is a 10 % increase.

I have a 360 myself. I know Sony is better on paper for hardware, but I always liked Microsofts online services better. Although I'm thinking about going with the Playstation this time around.

[insert typical PC snob comment here]

that pretty much sums up my feelings. Only reason I even own a console (xbox 360) is to play sports games and Halo and a couple of the Tom Clancy games which Ubisoft always dumps the PC version onto some third party developer. Sony as a company I just haven't been that impressed with.
A new Splinter Cell is in the works now. I think it's called Blacklist?

It's supposed to be backwards compatible by running the games off the cloud. We'll see how well that works out.

Well, then that's not really "backwards compatible," because it means you have to re-buy those games in order to play them on the PS4. Regardless, you're right...time will tell if that's something people will go for. Honestly, I think BOTH the PS4 and the XBoxOne will be crap sellers for the first few months (in contrast to what they think they'll sell. There's just not that much difference between the 4 and the 3, like there was between the 3 and the 2.

You've obviously not been introduced to the "yellow light of death." I have.

Also, I went through 3 PS2's. Those DVD mechanisms were so flimsy, harsh language would damage them.

Has microsoft completly lost its minds?

btw i thought the PS4 was not backwords compatiable either, since when did they change it to backwords compatable?

Well then....if that's true, I may have to buy one of those PS4's.

...a year from now.

I had an Xbox and a PS2.

I had a 360 and a PS3.

But if all announced about the Xbox One is true I will not be purchasing one and will only buy a PS4.

In the end... it's all first world problems but within it's own little bubble what Microsoft has decided to do to it's long time customers with the Xbox One can only be summed up with one visual image.

what is the yellow light of death?

right now i am trying to look up warning signs of a xbox 360 going to to fail from old age.
