The viability of home consoles sort of depends on this announcement. I'm not hopeful, but will be interesting.

Just hoping neither company(Microsoft or Sony) does anything that would limit your ability to play used games, because I will not be buying a console that does that.

Am rather excited to see what they are going to be bringing to the table, Microsoft won this generation by far, my Xbox to PS3 games ratio is rather ridiculous, though to be fair I got the Xbox sooner, but I always just get the Xbox version of a game because the controller is better IMO. Unless it's a racing game because I got a wheel for the PS3. Anyways, hopefully they will announce some pretty cool tech.

In the short-term It'd have to be pretty dramatic for me to move on a Playstation 4. I have a fatty 80 GB with hardware emulation support for earlier generations. My budget is limited as is my time, and unless Microsoft screws it up big over the next few years, I will likely side with Microsoft (even though I quite detest its utter reliance on the Xbox live interface for everything-including online video, local video and audio playback, etc.)

While I have from time to time used the console for games, it wasn't the strongest platform for that. It's greatest strength was during a great time of uncertainty in the Blu-ray market, the PS3 actually had dedicated firmware support and was a decent player. Many of the $100+ players are still weak in terms of interface, capability, and, quite frankly, disc support (you shouldn't be having problems watching, for instance, HBO programs on a dedicated disc player, but you do). How insane is it that I would encourage people to buy a Playstation for a dedicated movie player? But I did, and largely still do.

I just bought a Wii U. I want it for the Nintendo only games like zelda,SSB,Mario kart, and those random japanese games that turn out to be awesome, etc. and the unique game-play. My strategy is that I am just going to buy the PC versions of the ps4 and xbox 720 games that I want to play, my laptop is pretty good and will be better than those consoles.

They've just announced the PlayStation 4.

Deep Down(or whatever it will be called) really impressed me, showing off what we can expect from the next-gen. Can't wait for a Bioware game.

Interesting they went with what looks like a modified Bulldozer. In PCs, those take a fair amount of work to get to perform close to their Intel Counterparts. But the power consumption I believe as well as price is what pushed them to that.

That said, the console market is getting demolished by the casual and for the best performance, a desktop will always beat a console. I heard some guy is running TRIPLE SLi with GTX Titans. That's $3,000 in GPU.

I don't think the casual market is demolishing the market for hardcore games, it's just new people are playing games now. The hardcore market is still there, and still very lucrative, and both Microsoft, and Sony will need the hardcore market for their launches.

But that market share is not growing. The vast majority of growth in the past 5 years in the gaming market has been in casual games. Console really hasn't done much. Interestingly enough Microsoft is far more ahead in this area then Sony is, in shifting away from games and games only to entertainment centric. When girls were buying Xboxs for the non-gaming potential, that's big. Sony simply doesn't have this outside of the Blu-Ray player and residential disc media is a heart beat or two away from extinction.

That's true, but that isn't where the growth is. Microsoft is moving well away from being a game centric platform. You can do plenty more than just games on the Xbox. Sony doesn't seem to have realized that what Microsoft is doing is the future. Sony has to get out of the games centric mentality and into doing a heck of a lot more.

Interesting, I use my Xbox for games, and really games only, while I use my mostly PS3 for Netflix, Youtube, and as a Blu-Ray, and DVD player. And while yes you can do much more things than just game with these consoles, that doesn't mean that you games, hardcore games specifically aren't the main focus. That is what brings consoles into homes, especially with gaming becoming more and more popular.

Hmm. Have you seen what people are doing with the Xbox sensor thing? Games have become the last thing it's used with. But you are right that both consoles have lined up non-gaming features. But I always got the feeling that it was more of an afterthought for Sony where it was a key part for Microsoft. May be wrong on that, but I do recall that Microsoft got those earlier.

Yeah, the Kinect sucks, it isn't used for games because it sucks  It's kind of cool to wave through menu's, but not worth the money IMO.

Kinect is okay for games. I'm not a fan. But it does wonders for non-gaming applications.

5 Microsoft Xbox Kinect Hacks That'll Blow Your Mind

It may even be possible to use it as a 3D scanner for 3D printing. Sony can't even begin to top that.

Those are hacks, not something your casual gamer is going to do, hell its not even something I'm going to do, and I'm not "casual". And Kinect is not okay for games, most every game it just feels tacked on, and most every dedicated Kinect game is terrible.

The point is that the capabilities for what Microsoft brings to the party is amazing. A cheap 3D scanner for a 3D printer? That stuff is game changing.

That's not what Microsoft is bringing to the party though

PS4 eh? wow, not sure what to say about this.

I still don't want a console.

I wish to god they'd stop coming out with these new consoles! My pocketbook ACHES and MOANS every stinking time! I can barely keep up - my teenagers are all aflutter about this kind of crap, and I'm not keeping them 'outfitted' with more expensive crap that will be outdated in less than 18 months

*end old fogey rant*

It's been 7 years since the last generation. The technology is now ancient and has been holding game development back.

These consoles don't come out that often though. The PS3 came out in 06, and the Xbox 360 came out in 05, so this console cycle has lasted a good 7 years, which is the longest of any cycle, at least to my knowledge. And this cycle is estimated to last at least as long, depending on the market, or barring some new tech breakthrough.

So yeah, the new consoles won't be outdated in less than 18 months :2razz:
