Windows 8 Sucks!

That is too much of a stretch, sorry.

No...it's not.

Look, millions of people are at home with their smart phones. Millions are familiar with apps, tapping and swiping and...like me...speaking to their phones - and tablets - to control them. MS has melded that interface with the features and capabilities of Win7 to bring computing in line with what millions do every day.

For the future: touch screens, voice interfaces and motion interfaces. You'll see these for all forms of computing devices...from phones to desktops...and MS is at the forefront. It's leading the way.

They said it with Win7 too. A stopped clock is correct twice a day.

But 7 is actually is good and proven. But I do agree with you that it's ridiculous how it's always better with the next edition. I'm going to wait for Windows 9. Let's recall that Windows 7 was really just a fixed Vista. So windows 9 should be a fixed 8.

My concern is that in melding it all together, they have missed the mark completely. Business in particularly seems skeptical of the modern ui and it's impact on multi-tasking. For me, it feels like they just threw the Modern UI and the Start Screen on the PC edition without putting much design into tailoring the interface to that market. It feels like a touch interface designed for tablets and it can be frustrating at times. Each time you transition between Desktop and Modern, which is a must, is jarring. For instance I can't access devices charm from desktop or share to my mail client. Not to mention I remain skeptical that we actually need apps for Windows. I think it's too early to call it, we'll see. Maybe after SP1 and we actually see App developers make good apps and perhaps offer shortcut alternative to some of the gestures.

It's at least as good as Windows7. In fact i would describe it as better version of Win8.

Thanks to this nifty little program
It restores the start bar and gives you the benefits of both worlds, use the start screen and modern when you want to, or use the start menu and desktop. I use both and it means my experience is at least as good as Win7 and considering the other upgrades I would call it better.

I heard about that. But, IMO, this isn't Android. I shouldn't have to resort to stuff like that to get basic functionality. I expect with something like Android, not Windows.

Meh. I can't get excited when my Windows 7 does the job. Hardly worth the pain of upgrading. Maybe when I do another rig build I'll consider it, but right now I'm passing.

Yeah I agree about having to recover the start menu. It does seem stupid that MS didn't think of offering a choice they were just like nope.

Win7 is fine, anyway. It's not like it become obsolete the moment that Win8 came out. They really are the same system, just with a few new tricks for Windows 8. The roll out from Windows XP for Windows 7 took ages in the business world, it'll probably be the same here. If at alll....

Tell you the truth, I don't think the Corporate world is going to go for Windows 8. The sheer incompatibility of specialized software is already holding millions back in XP. My firm adopted Vista and Windows 7 and our national IT guys were pulling out their hair. If a huge firm like mine has serious problems I can't imagine that many other firms are going to go through this willingly.

I don't know...maybe because I have two monitors I don't get the "jarring" that you experience. I find it very easy to have the classic desktop on one screen and the Modern UI on the other and use each as I need to. In respect to businesses...they will always lag when it comes to new technology...especially operating systems. They'll come around in their own good time.

I think good apps for Win8 are coming that will make the Modern UI more useful. Speaking of apps...here are the ones I've found most useful so far:

Metro Commander
All My Storage
IM+
PC Monitor

How do I add more than one account in IM+? I have facebook but can't figure how to add skype.

You want to get to your "Accounts" screen. If you are on the "IM+" screen, scroll all the way to the right, click on the "Accounts" label, you'll be in the "Accounts" screen, right click on "Accounts", a menu bar will drop down, click the add button, you'll be in the "Select Services" screen and you are good to go.

Yes.... more applications to make it work like WINDOWS 7!!! Now if only they could come up with software to completly remove Metro except on phones and tablets. OH! WAIIIIT.... Its called Windows 7. :D

Vista 64 updated isn't different enough from Win 7 for me to pay for the upgrade price. And Win 8 isn't getting rave reviews from average PC users.

Except that all these apps work under the Modern UI...not Win7.

Take Metro Commander, for instance. It gives me the same function that Windows Explorer does...except I don't have to go into the desktop to do those things. Now I have a choice. Plus, it works for Win8 RT. Oh, and when I get my Win8 Pro tablet I'll use the same app on that, as well. No more needing to know three different programs to do the same thing on different machines.

That's the beauty of Win8.

YOu are adding more and more software to mimic Windows 7 and / or compensate for Windows 8 inefficiency. Talking about utter inefficiency here is a video on how to try to make Windows 8 use the Control Panel among other things Win7 can do . Youre RIGHT! There is a Control Panel!

Of course I'm right...I've only told you about three times in various threads. Why did you doubt me?

Anyway, that video wasn't about "how to try to make Windows 8 use the Control Panel". It was how to use the features of the OS.

You know...there's a whole lot of people out there who have no idea what a control panel is...like that old man in that video you posted. For those people, the settings in Win8 are just about all they'll ever need. But for the rest of us Win8 gives us the control over our system that we desire. That's the beauty of Win8.

There are things the Modern UI does well that the Desktop doesn't do well...and there are some things the Desktop does well that the Modern UI doesn't do well. That's why both are available. We get the best of both worlds. You, with your XP...or Win7...don't get those things.

 What Windows 8 gives us is a nice OS for a phone or tablet. What Windows 8 gives normal PC users is junk. Unneeded, unwanted changes. A different inefficient interface that tries to fix something that ISNT BROKEN.
You know what? You know how to drive your car right? Well lets install Windows 8 in it. To open the drivers door you have to first close the Garage affter you boot the computer. With your fancy ass-clown Garage you can do very simple tasks! Tasks that you could already do in your car! But instead of going strait in your car and doing it, now you have Garage! Once you close Garage you have to open the door. Dont how to??? AH! Thats because you have to relearn how! First stick an appendage into the muffler then press on the trunk. EXCELLENT! The door is open now! OK now you want to DRIVE your car. Dont have a key?? No start button? Thats RIGHT! This is a Windows 8 vehicle! so you cant do anything without out starting the car? You dont need it! Just kick the rear window and put your foot in the crevice of the rear seat where the back cushion meets the seat cushion. Perfect! You turned on the radio! No more right-clicking on the radio! Now to shut down Windows 8, deficate in the center console and open the glove compartment.
Relearning something that worked perefectly before is fun!

LOL!!!

Excessive hyperbole that doesn't match reality noted.

Win8 is not junk and it most certainly is not inefficient...unless, of course, you are so hidebound and set in your way as to make me wonder if you even HAVE a phone or a tablet.

You know...there is one thing missing from Win8 that I miss: Aero. I really like the effects. Now, I fully understand that some people have computers that would be stressed if they enabled Aero in Win7. I'm not one of them. With my 6 core i7 cpu, 16 GB ram and 680 graphics card my computer didn't skip a beat with Aero and I don't think it would if Aero were in Win8, either.

BUT!!! I'm not going to start shouting, "OMERGERD!! They took away my AERO!! Screw THIS!! I'm not buying Win8 till they give me back Aero!!"

I guarantee in a year Windows 8 computers will be worth the same as computers loaded with Vista.

Revealing your level of computer knowledge.

As if you cant just install 7 or 9 or linux or even freaking OSX.

THAT is NOT a Control Panel. Its a watered down set of very basic options.

Err go to the Control Panel... then top right corner is "View by".. change that to large icons... and guess what? The control panel has not changed its look since at least Vista.... been a while since I ran Windows Xp, so cant remember if it also had as standard the "noob control panel" view.

Face it, Microsoft locked down the OS so much that a computer savy person cant change it! Im pizzed! Windows 8 is the retarded cousin of Windows 7! :crazy3:

I am a computer savy person and can do all the things I want.. and even more now.

Also..... When Windows 7 came out it was much faster at bootup. What happened? Patches. I think about FORTY GIGs of patches. Win8 will slow down too.
Face the facts!
The Giant Noodle has spoken!!!! *turning on .wav file of recorded thunder*

LOL, Windows 7 did/does not have 40 gigs of patches lol.. that is Apple OSX.

/smack The Giant Noodle... open your eyes to reality!

Thats not the control panel.. that is the settings panel for Metro.. HUGE difference.

I DLd windows 8 upgrade for 15 bucks...I have it on a thumb drive and I wont install it....I never install new opsys until either all the complaints stop or its truly established it sucks...like win 95 and millienium....Ill pass on installing it

Just fyi.. most of the complaints are irrational drivel by people who seem to lack basic comprehension skills or by people who feel threatened by the OS... the Valve guy comes to mind. And then there are of course the usual Applefanboys and linux nerds who have not actually tried the OS. Best one I have heard so far is someone complaining that Windows 8 was impossible to install.. on his Mac via Boot Camp.. I mean come on...

I never install new opsys right away pete...Ive heard good and bad about 8 from professionals...newsletters that I get and other reading...I have no need for mobile windows...I was born and raised without a cell phone implanted in my rectum...:)

I can respect your decision. I was going to do the same...except it was going to cost me $40.00 because I haven't bought a new PC recently.

But I tried out the preview for a week or so and I've been reading a couple of tech sites about the OS for some months and, from their hands-on reviews and my own experiences I figured, "Why wait." The only thing that isn't fully developed and tested about Win8 are the apps. There just haven't been that many made yet. But they'll come. In the meantime, I can do like I'm doing right now...watching Al Jazeera video feed in a neat Win8 app on one screen while I post on DP on the other. I know that's not an earth-shattering activity...I could have done that under Win7...but it's really easy to do with Win8.

I think you'll be pleased with it when you do finally decide to install it.

A friend of mine owns a computer shop...I was there this morning and I asked him about 8...he said here it is...he said he thinks it sucks...I played with it a little, not enough to be able to comment on it...
