Okay, I bought this game last November. I finally overcame the WinXP dragon log freeze by waiting 15 minutes for the damned game to launch. Then I got the opening filmstrip up to character creation... then... WTF??? My mouse, WASP, none of my controls work for character creation. The only thing I can do is change races... I can't change genders, I can't change heads, I can't change bodies, I can't even hit "ok" to name my character.

In other words, my game is over in 3 minutes. Can anyone give me any hope of overcoming this completely perplexing, completely game-stopping bug? I've googled until I'm blue and have discovered many pc users have problems here, but none are totally shut down with no mouse working, no WASP working, no nothing.

Anyone here have a suggestion?

I bought an xbox controller

I think it has something to do with how Windows and the game interact with each other when it comes to the mouse. In the "old days" of Win98 and Win XP, the program had "priority" over the mouse, but with Vista (and later XP service packs I think) onwards it is Windows that has full control.

Now what it smells like on your pc, provided you are running XP, is that the game is waiting for Windows to tell it what to do, where as XP is waiting for the game to do what it wants with the mouse, leaving you with no mouse control. Now most games had a "hardware mouse" option that made it possible to get over this problem.. so try looking for that. Else... install Windows 7, which the new Skyrim was designed for :)

I have seen this problem with older games on Windows 7, and newer games on Windows XP. Sadly I cant remember off hand what I did to fix the problem.

i havent had a problem but skyrim and oblivion are written horribly except for a small pool of hardware.

xp might need updated mouse drivers or a startup script added to skyrim.that game was very well designed but poorly supported for hardware.if you have the non steam launcher in your bethseda folder try that, just keepin mind all graphics options wont be available without steam.

Perhaps it's time you join the modern world and upgrade to Win7?

I have Win XP and have no issues with Skyrim. I have a Nvidia graphics card and their drivers. You could try uninstalling and then reinstalling Skyrim, perhaps reformatting your PC if you don't mind doing that. Also are you running Service Pack 3 for XP?

You don't know what you are missing

I have been playing Skyrim since last November. I am now playing my 4th charactor, a Brit. Love the game. I did have problems at first with my game getting pixellated in the opening cut scene. I finally downloaded the newest patch and drivers for my graphics card an NVIDIA 250 GTS with one gig of RAM. I have a pretty hefty processor Quad core Intel at 2.66 Ghz and 4 gig of DDR-2 Ram. I have had the game freeze up when going through a door.

I suggest you download the 2 new high resolution patches because they have added some new parts to that game. Every time I play with a different character, I find places I never found before, or enemies that are much harder than they were before, and I am at Level 40 right now.

I'm running Windows XP X64 bit, and I don't have a problem running Skyrim. I hate Windows 7. It's the most unintuitive software I have ever encountered. I'm going to sit back and let 7 go the way of Vista. Besides 10 is coming out soon, anyway. I will still be using XP. I would still be using Windows 98 if all the latest games still played on it.

Good points because I have had similar problems in the game, not lately now, but in the past, I could no longer use my mouse to fight. I had to hit the Q key, the one for blocking, several times to make my ability to defend myself come back. I would like to think that the patches that Steam has pushed have fixed that little problem.

To each his own.

But I have to point out that win7 won't be going the way of Vista. Heck, it's been around for more than three years and is going strong. Oh, and I have to point out that win10 won't be coming out any time soon. Win8 is...in October. From the look of things, win8 is getting about the same reception that Vista got...but for different reasons.

For me to convert to Windows 7 would be a headache. I will wait until I build another PC and then install a new clean copy of Windows 7. I definitely will have nothing to do with an upgrade version. Yeah, you're right. I somehow got Windows 8 mixed up. That's pushing the envelope for Windows 10. Then again, it's believable since Windows 95 jumped to Windows 98.

I won't be upgrading to win8 until touch monitors come out at reasonable prices...but I expect that to be not so far down the road. When that happens, I'll be loving win8 or more probably win9. I have an Asus tablet with Jellybean that I love, but I'll probably move to a win8 tablet in the next year. I think Android's days are numbered. Android and its apps are fine, but being able to run the same windows programs on a tablet that I do on my home system...I see that as the future.

FYI, the military had touch screen monitors back in the 70's. They are nothing new. It's just that back in the 70's, the home PC wasn't to be had. We used to program back in HP-Basic, and they were rudimentary programs at best. When they came out with Visual Basic, there was hope that we could use VB to program the military apps for the home PC. That wasn't realized until really later on.

Oh, I know touchscreens have been around for a long time. But now...with massive use of smartphones and tablets, touchscreens are poised to jump past the use of the mouse and keyboard in the home PC market. The only thing we need is for prices of touchscreens to come down. Win8/Win9 is positioned to take advantage when that happens. Until then...we still have Win7. (or XP for those who just can't give that up)

Looking ten years down the road, I envision touchscreens to give way to motion sensitive and voice control as the dominant method for interacting with all of your computing devices.

By that time, maybe Skyrim or something similar will give us swords and axes and allow us to climb right into the PC so we can be there, "virtually." That will help us in our physical fitness programs as well. Then DP will have a thread: "What Did You Do for Your Virtual Workout?"

I'm looking forward to that...though at my age, I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it physically. I'll probably have to limit myself to the more cerebral VR games.

DiAnna try something like this (fast PC) if funds are available. And upgrade with this (xtra RAM mem) if possible. You'll be good for awhile before anything out speeds you again.

Oh and you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for $14.99 when it releases in a couple months.

That's not quite true, grip.

The $14.99 price only applies if you buy a PC right now, or recently, that has win7 installed.

If you look at my preceding post you'll see I was suggesting a link to a new computer, where she could upgrade the OS afterwards.

Okay, my bad.

Though, I wouldn't buy a new computer...at least not the one you suggest. I'd just get Win7.

I'd almost bet the problem with the game play is the processing speed not just the OS, could be wrong though.

Everyone's got different taste on PC choices. I guarantee you won't find a laptop much faster for less.

You may know something I don't, but I don't see anything in this thread that indicates that DiAnna has...or even wants...a laptop. But, if she has a desktop, I can guarantee that, for $630.00, I could upgrade her computer to something that'll play Skyrim...and be much faster...than that laptop you suggested.
