Some new releases will require a 64bit OS to run

It actually already happened in 2009. However the extended support (with newest service pack only) to 2014.

Technically it was not.. visually and user-ability Vista was too Linux/Apple like on security.

Best OS out there.

Disagree fully. Having played around with Windows 8, I find after a short time, I actually prefer it to Windows 7. Certain aspects enhance the Windows experience and others are revolutionary. Metro look is good on touch screens.. desktop.. well takes some getting use too, but it is in fact no difference than your desktop/start button put in one. I found that my productivity (getting to stuff) went up because of the Metro thing.

But saying that, there was still a lot of tweaking to be done so my final judgement will come with the RC coming out next month.

MS pulled a few scams on us...and it slapped a lasting label on them...Windows Millenium ? remember that ruse...windows 95..and that total bs policy of you could only install windows on one computer and You had to call them if you crashed and had to re install...I changed HDs and had to call MS in INDIA was on the phone 45 minutes to get to re install it......MS has had some real fails...and for some of us that have been around and aware...we know the dirty deals and vicious attacks MS made on other companies and how they stole others technology and Lost in court....NetScape Navigator..for one...Java for another.....and alot I just forgot.
Having said that MS has gotten better and they have improved their image and it "SEEMS" all that happened with Gates retired...

Yea I agree, but the MS of today has very little of the MS of the early years.

Microsoft has made a few "duds" and still managed to remain top dog when it comes to operating systems. Millenium was horrible. Vista was not bad, just not what Windows users expected.. after all they dont expect to confirm every install and starting of programs like with Apple and Linux (relatively speaking) which made Vista more secure but also bloody annoying to work with. Windows 7 "fixed" that and Windows 8 will take it to the next level.

Windows XP lasted a decade and until recently was the most popular OS out there. Windows 3.0 and 3.11 were also pretty good for their time as was Windows 95 and 98, although I admit that OS/2 was better.. but by the time it came out, it was pretty much game over.... Microsoft had won.

That is also the reason that OSX and Linux never really took off.. even today, many people dual boot OSX and Windows.. which is kinda funny. And lets not get into the control freak environment of OSX and Apple.. they remind me of Microsoft mid 1980s.

I for the most part agree with you pete...except vista was junk...most annoying Opsys ever and MS remained top dog because they were the only dog on the porch, they made sure of that by hatcheting everyone else that tried to compete with them...MS was a dirty snake of a company for two decades...lawsuits and user disdain made them change I believe. No one has the huge resources to compete with MicroSoft.
An example of what good engineering can do however...is Mozilla Firefox...they have destroyed every other Browser out there including explorer...and all profit free :)

Firefox is crap today... use to be good but today even Internet Explorer is better, faster and lighter. Of course nothing beats Google Chrome and nothing is worse then Safari.

I disagree...try aurora beta....I cant stand google chromes interface dont like opera dont like maxim safari is out of the question...I try them all as they are released and my main is always a beta firefox...
I think eventually seamonkey will be a good choice for average users...never for power users..
But I have the latest beta and its not bad with built in Tbird and other stuff...It would never be my main browser
