Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Microsoft Office costs around $200, and you are supposed to pay for the Windows OS too... another $200 (I'm rounding the numbers) then you pay for the game(s) at $50 a pop. I've yet to find something that Open Office doesn't do that MS Office does, oh and Open Office ... also free." If "games" are that important to you and you're more than happy getting screwed by Microsoft to play them - you certainly have the opportunity and freedom of choice to continue paying through the nose for insecure junk. Microsoft needs folks like you Pete - you're part of their business plan!

Aww did I hurt your feelings by calling Linux useless? Facts hurt eh? Linux is useless to most people because it does not act like Windows. They cant run office, and Open office is too alien a step for them. Finding files and what not in Linux is horrible, and installing programs not found in their distribution is hell on earth. Face it, Linux sucks for the average Joe. And from your comments...then you are a typical Linux nerd that is in total denial over reality.. I have been debating people like you since windows 95 came out and the arguments from your side has been the same since day one.. and has never changed..

And games do matter.. games are a huge consumer product and it all started in large part on the PC. And certain games can really only be played on a PC since they require a keyboard.

And Linux Mint > Ubuntu just so you know.

Aww did I hurt your feelings by calling Linux useless?
Ignorance doesn't hurt my feelings at all. I can see why it's useless to you...

Linux is useless to most people because it does not act like Windows. They cant run office, and Open office is too alien a step for them.
See that's the ignorance I'm talking about. Linux isn't Unix... and in the past 4 years it can run any software Windows can run, though, Linux is a networking operating system so it takes some manipulation to get it to step down to do so.

Finding files and what not in Linux is horrible, and installing programs not found in their distribution is hell on earth. Face it, Linux sucks for the average Joe.
Like I said Pete - you're living in 2007 apparently...

Like I said Pete --- Microsoft thanks you and your wallet and bank on you. Have fun getting viruses, malware, your identity stolen... you paid big cold hard cash for all that, and the bloated virus protection and firewall software to compensate for an overpriced O/S.

And Linux Mint > Ubuntu just so you know.
Linux Mint is a fine O/S, but just so you know, it's Kernel is Ubuntu. Mint puts a new GUI on top of it and Mint is usually a full release behind Ubuntu, if not more. I've run both ... so the little jab doesn't mean much to me.

Keep paying dude! At least buy Microsoft stock...

Have fun getting viruses, malware, your identity stolen...

Not one of these things has ever happened to me. Mostly because I'm not an idiot.

One doesn't have to be an idiot ... one simply has to run Microsoft. If I take you at your word, if it hasn't happened yet, it soon will. Or you may be infected and not even know it...

Either way, not my problem since in the history of Unix and Linux, I can count on one hand the number of viruses or maleware on Linux.... Did I mention Linux is free?

Soon? It's been 20 years. On what day can I expect this?

You probably already have it and don't know it.... let's put it this way. I've been using computers now since around 1981. That's 30 years. I don't know of a person alive or dead who's run Windows and at some point in time, hasn't gotten a worm, a virus, or some sort of maleware. You claiming such a thing... I guess you're the first in history. Congratulations.

Well, now you do know of such a person. Add that to your anecdotal bank.

I run scans now and then, just out of curiosity more than anything else; they always come up empty. You can avoid viruses and any crap you don't want easily enough if you're not an idiot.

The only reason Ubuntu doesn't have many is because you can also count on one hand the number of people who use it. (But those who do are quickly becoming the new Mac-tards.)

Anecdote? No... you just don't know what you don't know. Such a person doesn't exist... but it's cute that you think you're the one. I won't bust your bubble. Be happy and think pleasant thoughts about being the only MS user in existence who's never had their computers infected by anything... ever in 20 years. You rule dude! :rock

Linux and Unix run the internet... it's not the number of people who use Linux that prevents it from being attacked, though I can understand why many would think that. What O/S do you think the people who write the viruses use themselves? Hint: It's not Microsoft.....

So, 20 years of empty scans and absolutely no behavioral issues (except due to faulty hardware) are trumped by what you just know.

I'm not alone. I know at least several others who can say the same; the notion that we're unique is ludicrous.

Sure it is; it's because no one would bother to try if it's going to affect so few people, and the chances of finding them are slim.

What O/S do you think the people who write the viruses use themselves? Hint: It's not Microsoft.....

Have you taken a survey of virus creators?

Whatever you say....

Uh huh. i'm sure you're right.

Have you taken a survey of virus creators?
I work with quite a few who have written, isolated, and deconstruction them. Do you need a poll to tell you what you already know but refuse to believe or... ?

Whatever you say....

 Don't know why you're so emotionally invested in the idea that if you use Windows, you MUST get viruses, etc. Point of fact: I have not.

Uh huh. i'm sure you're right.

Some hard data would be preferable to stubborn childishness, sure.

As a person who is happily gaming my life away in a Microsoft environment, I must say that...while this little back and forth about Linux vs MS is mildly interesting...it really has nothing to do with my thread title.

Perhaps the two of you could move your "discussion" to another thread?

Why are you brining Unix into this discussion?

Some manipulation? HAHAHA, you need a freaking windows emulator to get Windows Software to run.. and the best ones cost money.. so what is the freaking point? Setting up this crap is time consuming and requires some knowledge of linux and the linux lingo.

Like I said Pete - you're living in 2007 apparently...

Nope, in 2012 with Linux Mint and Ubuntu live. You try to install lets say.. JDownloader... not part of the package system but very popular. It aint a simple download and click install last I looked a few months ago.. Has it gotten better? Oh yea, Debian has made large improvements in installing programs, but it is no way as easy as in Windows.

And like it or not, for the average PC user, the file system in Linux is alien...Finding things can be a pain...

Like I said Pete --- Microsoft thanks you and your wallet and bank on you. Have fun getting viruses, malware, your identity stolen... you paid big cold hard cash for all that, and the bloated virus protection and firewall software to compensate for an overpriced O/S.

Funny, same argument I heard in the 1990s from people like you.. and at least then it was some what true... if you get your identity stolen or infected by malware/virus in Windows these days, then there is a 99% chance that it is your own fault... the classic "you did not read what was written on the screen" And if you were in Linux, then you would also be infected / identity stolen.. if the hackers were bothered with the <1% of the market. Like it or not, in todays world, the problem with virus/malware can be solved in large part by education of the person behind the keyboard of what not to do.

Oh and before you start claiming there is no virus/malware in linux... not true.. Android, which is linux based, is the fastest rising area for that, and that is because 50% plus of smartphones run the OS. Hackers go towards where people are, and linux on the desktop has very few users and hence they are ignored. Apple had the same "bliss" for decades, and then they hit 10% marketshare in some markets and malware/virus started jumping out of the walls at them and they were totally unprepared and are still playing catchup.

No, Ubuntu is Debian.. as is Linux Mint.. originally.
