New rule - Don't be a Jerk

Don’t be a jerk.

We’re a rapidly growing and evolving messageboard. As such, we’ve had to quickly adopt new rules, re-write some old ones, and then try and tweak the board as we see what works and what doesn’t. Our debate board doesn’t function without you, or fellow posters. A group of moderators debating only goes so far. However…

There is a main rule missing that really needs to govern us all. It’s the “don’t be a jerk” rule. Yes, we all know a personal attack when we see it, a copyright violation, or a bit of spam. However, there are times when a poster’s style teeters on the edge of appropriate debate into something else. When their behavior is set just to troll other posters into frustration or into attacking them back.

Don’t be a jerk simply means that. Don’t be a jerk.

Yes, it’s a bit vague. In fact, it’s a bit intentionally vague. We can’t think of every incidence where this rule may need to be pulled out. However, we’re not going to be draconian with its application either. We’ll let you know if we think you are coming close to this rule or have violated this rule. 99% of our posters will never have to worry about this either. And that’s the way we like it. We want this to be easy and comfortable here and not bogged down by rules. That being said, we have the 1% contingent that needs to be addressed.

This thread is for questions/discussion of this new rule.
(Please note, this rule will not be enforced in the basement.)
