I heard the author on Public Radio, last week, answer questions about how pollution, population, contraception and abortion restrictions influence the quality of life for humans, and women.

Robert Engelman, the Author, points out that goverenmental restrictions on abortions have adverse consequences for the vitality of families and human enjoyment. Most agree that infanticide is undesirable, yet Engelman's findings show the self proclaimed "pro-lifers" advocacy of goverment and societal restrictions on abortion, actaully increases the frequency of infanticide. Mental health issues increase for women when abortions are restricted.


This is an organization whose advocacy is for Governments to keep out of the reproductive and sex lives of the society.

It is a shame that the morality coercers tend to totally ignore all issues about female welfare. They might come across as a tad more rational if they didn't.

I wonder if the secularisation thesis (normally used to suggest that religion is an inferior good and will disappear with scientific advancement) could be adapted to understand abortion opposition. For example, as a country grows more advanced (with therefore experiences increases in education and the celebration of basic human rights), does the opposition to abortion (ceteris paribus) tend to fall?
