Positions on Global Warming

In the wake of the CRU hack there's been interest in GW beyond the usual crowd. I'm curious to know where the forum stands on (A)GW

The poll is public

The Law of Thermodynamics. It can't be broken.

The Truth is out there. Just look for it.

If the climate changes in one place on earth, climate changes in another place to balance the difference. Just ask El Nino and La Nina.

Re: Positions on Global Warming

I think that we've not monitored the global climate for long enough to be able to have a very good idea of whether the recent warming trend is natural or unnatural. And I think that the mechanisms governing the global climate system are so complex that we may never fully understand them, which makes any claims that global warming is absolutely caused by human activity dubious at best.

The problem with this is that the earth is not an isolated system. It's receiving a constant influx of energy from the sun. If more of that energy is turned into heat, the overall temperature of the earth will rise.

Re: Positions on Global Warming

There is no doubt that the planet is in some sort of transition phase. The question is if that is natural or natural but boosted in intensity by human activity.

Considering the amount of pollution we are pumping into the atmosphere then only the brain-dead cant accept the fact that we have some role in the changes. Is that role large or small.. that is the question.

But no matter what, the changes are devastating and the miss-information by both sides on the issue does not help.

Global warming is not per say only a heating of the planet, it is also very much.. in fact at the moment mostly, a radical change in weather patterns world wide.

For example, we are now in late November where I live in Spain. The temperature outside is still over 20 degrees C, 5 degrees or so over the normal. This is suppose to be the rainy season and we have had under 5mm of rain so far this season... almost 3 months into the rainy season. They are thankfully promising rain tomorrow, but lets see..

And if we go back a bit, this area had the hottest October on record with an average temp of around 23 degrees C and some days getting close to 30 degrees. We also had the hottest July on record with most continuous days with warm air coming from the internal parts of Spain (being on the coast then it is rareish that it happens), giving more days of 32+ degrees during the summer than in recorded memory.

If we look around the world, in Australia there is still a massive drought going on and it is not more than a week ago that the temps hit 42 degrees in areas to only fall too 22 degrees a day later. And only a month or so ago they had rains that caused massive flooding, but not enough to end the drought across the country.

In the Himalayas the glaciers and snows that feed the people of the sub continent with water are getting smaller and smaller and in some cases have disappeared. Just wait and see when a billion+ people run out of water and see what happens. In South America in the Andies the same is happening.

So like it or not the planet is changing dramatically and it will have serious impact on the way we live. Water is getting more and more a rare commodity and normally arable land are turning into deserts. And when it does rain then we see devastating floods like in the UK and other places that cost lives.

So anyone denying that we dont have an issue we must deal with is either in denial or stupid, and not going to non polluting technology is frankly a stupid policy even if it costs us more.

Rather be poor and alive than rich and dead because the planet died...

Re: Positions on Global Warming

Your poll could have been a typical political poll with an agenda. I picked that is is not warming because over recent years it has not. Over the last 30 years there would be net warmth. The trend over centuries is that the temperature goes up and down. This is just to note that my vote was based on data from the most recent years since you did not specify. Man's contribution is miniscule in any case.

By pollution I suspect that you are referring to CO2, that great gas that makes all life possible. I guess that all us CO2-polluting humans need to go!

And you call others "brain-dead".

Not the humans. Just some of our ways. We, unlike animals, have the brain capacity to problem-solve and think logically, so let's put it to good use.

Global Climate change is just a way to make and have control. It is a mere political ploy to feed on environmental fears. For a long time the enviro movement has been the silent scream at the back of the room. It is now that they are given a voice to infuse their rhetoric which is really misguided. Even Al Gore can't or won't debate in a public forum on his positions od Climate change. GE is one of the most who this controversy will damage the worst with their heavy investments in the technologies involved.
Once anyone starts to politicize science then you will not have substantial truth in the investigation of the climate.
God nows if there were real aliens that landed and we would have to rely on science to validate it.
This for sure is putting a black eye on science that will take a long time to disappear.
