EPA 'Cow Tax' Could Charge $175 per Dairy Cow to Curb Greenhouse Gases

EPA 'Cow Tax' Could Charge $175 per Dairy Cow to Curb Greenhouse Gases

Quote:
Farm Bureau warns just this one rule may increase milk production costs up to 8 cents a gallon.

Indirectly it could be considered a cheeseburger tax, but one of the suggestions offered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) for regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act is to levy a tax on livestock.
I think this is but a glimpse of what is to come under an Obama Administration. Hopefully he proves me wrong

To be fair, this isn't Obama's EPA proposing this.

This proposal is one of the stupidest ideas the EPA has had yet! A tax of that magnitude on every dairy cow would send the price of dairy products soaring, not to mention possible carryover to the beef industry.

Damn these anti-animal activists who are hellbent on stopping the American citizen the right to eat a steak.

8 cents/gallon.

Also, I don't understand why they're proposing that the tax on dairy cattle be twice as high as that of beef cattle.

Don't dairy cows live longer, therefore releasing more methane into the air?

Personally, I'm a chicken kind of guy.

Beef and dairy producers should counter with a manure tax. Congress puts out more BS than cattle...

production cost goes up 8 cents. that means grocery stores pay more for the milk, and charge consumers more.

according to the CA dept. of food and agriculture, it costs between 1.96 and 2.35 to produce a gallon of milk that is ready for stores. stores then sell a gallon of milk for what, $2.50-4.50 depending on brand?

[cost of processing is regulated to keep the farmers from getting ripped off, but once they sell it to stores the stores can charge whatever they want for it.]

considering how much retail stores profit from their merchandise, we can expect +$.08 production to be disproportionately represented in the ultimate cost of dairy products to consumers.
