Re: EPA 'Cow Tax' Could Charge $175 per Dairy Cow to Curb Greenhouse Gases

IF the ball of "taxing people for globull warming" really kicks off, expect that $0.08 cost to be scoffed at by the acolytes that think paying $5.00 a gallon for gas is too low(Obama being one of those folks). Stuff like this drives me aboslutely batty.

according to the CA dept. of food and agriculture, it costs between 1.96 and 2.35 to produce a gallon of milk that is ready for stores. stores then sell a gallon of milk for what, $2.50-4.50 depending on brand?

[cost of processing is regulated to keep the farmers from getting ripped off, but once they sell it to stores the stores can charge whatever they want for it.]

considering how much retail stores profit from their merchandise, we can expect +$.08 production to be disproportionately represented in the ultimate cost of dairy products to consumers.
I doubt it would be by much. The difference between the price that milk sells for and the price of production is the transportation/marketing/sale/profit. I don't see why this tax would affect any of those.

the only reason I can think of is that stores set their prices to make a certain % profit, not a fixed amount. even that way it would not be a huge effect, but a cow tax is a great excuse for them to jack up the prices as high as they want without being held accountable for it.
