I would like to use this to exemplify the stupidity of the electoral college yet again.

Obama won with 60mil popular votes.

Romney had 57mil. Or something like that.

If you divide the total population of the USA (300+mil) against the total number of electors (538) you get that 1 electoral should represent, if we are to be fair, about 550k people. Because thats the math... lets say 303 mil / 538 =~565k.

But Obama won the popular vote by about 3-5 mil people and the electoral college vote by 126.

if you were to turn the 3-5mil people into the appropiate number of electoral votes Obama should get more than romney, its 6-10.
If you turn the number of electoral votes he actually got into the people these electors should represent... you would get 69mil. In terms of popular vote, that is a 60mil + discrepancy. Somewhere, 60mil americans have been forcefully made to support Obama without their consent... and some even if they would have supported romney. And this is because the electoral college loves states, and gives votes to states, not people. And because of that, if you win a state with 1 person or 1mil, it still doesn't matter. And the rest aren't represented at all.

This is why it doesn't work. Candidates don't spend time in the states they know they will win no matter what. They only spend time in the states that they need to win by 1 person... at the expense of all the others who voted.

This is why the electoral college SUCKS BALLS. It disenfranchizes its entire constituency and defeats the very idea of a representative democracy.

So there you go.

Romney got spanked!

While I agree that the EC should be changed to match todays electorate, it will never happen. Both parties are never going to allow that to even be discussed. The lack of true representation of the current all or nothing format that most States have with their Electoral Votes is outdated and "disenfranchises" many voters.

The reason the electoral college will not change is because the conservative voters only hate it when they feel that they weren't properly represented and the liberal voters only hate it when they weren't properly represented and those two things never happen at the same time.

We could get it changed if we wanted to, but the unfortunate fact is that at any given moment, not enough of us want to.

I believe in democracy and our democratic republic, so I always want to. But, I am the exception.

No, the real reason it is not going to change is that it gives extra Congressional and Presidential political clout to lots of small pop states but not only is that political clout in charge of crafting the Constitutional Amendment the change would require but then the Amendment has to be ratified by 2/3 of the States. It would require a very different population distribution among the States than what we have (and what is likely) before that wouldn’t involve a number of States agreeing to give up influence.

Two words for why Republicans won't support the elimination of the Electoral College: President Gore.
