Interior proposal would block oil shale development on federal lands in West - The Hill's E2-Wire

U.S. limits oil-shale development in Rocky Mountains | Deseret News

The Interior Department on Friday issued a final plan to close 1.6 million acres of federal land in the West originally slated for oil shale development.
The proposed plan would fence off a majority of the initial blueprint laid out in the final days of the George W. Bush administration. It faces a 30-day protest period and a 60-day process to ensure it is consistent with local and state policies. After that, the department would render a decision for implementation.
The move is sure to rankle Republicans, who say President Obama’s grip on fossil fuel drilling in federal lands is too tight.

Let me see, I remember during the debate that Romney said as much, and that Obama was serious about energy.

It depends on exactly where this land is located. What environmental issues are involved and if there are any FWS issues as well. Just saying they are locking up land is naive and uninformed

I am not sure how the plan to mine the stuff so I err on the side of the ban.

We have so much known natural gas reserves, thanks to government developed frakking technology, oil shale is literally a dinosaur. It's irrelevant.

By the way, the oil isn't going anywhere so if it turns out in 25 years we need it, it'll be there. But we won't. Oil is becoming increasingly irrelevant in a natural gas economy

I have been out of touch with the cost ratio with this procedure for some time so I was not sure if it was realistic. But I agree it probably is a dinosaur and an expensive one as well.

Not if they strip mine the stuff, which is my concern. The thing about middle eastern oil is the profits go to the middle east. Even if it is more expensive to produce, it does not mean there isn't a potential for profit there or else nobody would care to begin with.
