Steve Schmidt was the chief political advisor to Republican 2008 nominee John McCain. He now works as one of the "expert" talking heads on NBC and its other outlets.
NBC ended its major election coverage this morning at 3 AM for the first string squad. Between 2:30 and 3 AM Schmidt provided the main undeniable reason why Mitt Romney and so many Republican Senate candidates went down in flames.
Romney had a landslide of his own last night - he garnered 60% of the White Vote. He won the single largest racial demographic in the land.

When this was last done - 1984 with Ronald Reagan and 1988 with George Bush Sr. - the result were electoral landslides and easy victories. Last night it meant defeat as Obama and the Dems racked up 80% of the non-white vote.
In the 84 election Ronald Reagan carried 49 states with 525 Electoral votes and garnered almost 59% of the popular vote. He got the same percentage of the white vote then as Romney did in 2012.
In the 88 election Bush Sr. carried 40 states with 426 Electoral votes and got over 53% of the popular vote. he got the same percentage of the white vote then as Romney did in 2012.
Schmidt and others went on to say that the GOP cannot last for long as the White Peoples Party - either officially or unofficially. The old formula for victory now translates into defeat as the Democrats garner an every increasing share of the minority vote and the minority vote becomes ever increasing itself from one election cycle to the next.
I have repeatedly stated that the reason for so many state voter suppression laws is that the GOP has only two choices to victory in a national election: they must either move to the middle and stop being the angry white persons alternative to the multi-racial rainbow that the Dems are..... OR ..... they must find a way to defy those Census Bureau predictions that come with a nation where Whites are the minority by 2050 or so.
The increasing "purifying" of the GOP by conservatives and libertarians that started with Reagan some thirty years ago has now resulted in the right leaning party of White Folks. And they cannot win that way.
All voter suppression laws apparently did was to motivate minorities to stand in line for hour after hour and vote on Tuesday in open defiance of those same efforts. They did NOT deliver Pennsylvania for the GOP as a high State Republican had promised when that state instituted its own version of voter suppression laws.
The GOP is now like a football team who clings to using only the rush into the line for a few yards when their opponents have embraced a passing attack or a motion offense. The Republicans are akin to a basketball team who eschew the three point shot and continue to play 1950' style ball while their opponents change with the changes of the rules of the game.
Those who fail to adapt.... those who fail to change ..... those who refuse to modernize while others around them embrace change and adaption can soon find themselves going the way of high button shoes and big band music.
And there is both the answer for yesterday and the huge problem the GOP faces today.

The contest showed how dramatically the U.S. has changed in recent years. According to exit polls, Mr. Romney won 60% of the white vote. Mr. Obama won 38%, five points less than his 2008 showing. Not since Walter Mondale, who was swept aside by Ronald Reagan in the 1984 presidential race, has a Democrat recorded a smaller share of the white vote.
