In these last few days, the candidates are scrambling to other states - both to defend what appears hair-thin leads and to seek a win in states they are a hair thin behind in.

Did both Obama and Romney get too caught up in battling over Ohio and possibly had made a better gamble to throw their massive resources and time elsewhere or more spread about?

Slogans and history tend to take lives of their own. The words "No one has won the presidency since... without Ohio" seemed to take control. But in that past that may have meant that in a equally spread out national campaign Ohio is a middle INDICATOR and NOT THE CONTROLLING FACTOR.

What do you think? Did this all really always did boil down to Ohio? Or would it have been wiser to fixate on others states or more equally spread the effort around?

Romney finishing in Pittsburgh has appeal both in PA coal country and conservative southern Ohio. I think they they have been so fixated on Ohio and that stat that no GOP wins without it that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It does seem foolish to have put their cards there, UNLESS it was a diversion to try to lock Obama down there with a plan all along to be ready to raid some of the other states in the last few days with pre-planned ads and pre-planned strategies already in place. Hard to know what both are thinking and strategizing in the back rooms.

^indeed. there are many paths to victory that dont involve winning a blue collar state like ohio, i think the republicans may have backed themselves into a corner dumping so much $ into it and ignoring other possibilities just because of the traditional 'lose ohio lose the us' mentality.

It is a statistic brought to you by the Ohio State Television Advertising Sales Association or whatever the heck the real thing is called. Any state that can make itself a must have gets a huge boom in local market TV & Radio ad sales. It is all about the Benjamins.

Agreed, the Romney camp was fixated on Ohio. Now it's best to head in another direction. The Romney campaign will now take Pennsylvania and Michigan on their way to victory on election day.

i wish governor scott had that kind of sense, we could use the boost.

Welcome to the Electoral College devised election. And people bitch that removing the EC would have candidates' focus on too much on small regions to win the election.

These billion-dollar campaigns are extremely sophisticated. They're not working from gut feeling or emotion. Romney knows he's not going to win PA. It's a false bravado thing that Republican presidential candidates do to project confidence.

It is why everybody tried to jump ahead of NH in the primaries--by Super Tuesday all the ad money is gone.

... that is all very nice, but he has no infrastructure in either state. He made is bet on Ohio and lost the bet. He should have invested in Michigan and Pennsylvania long ago if he intended to be taken seriously there. His going there now is more of a "hail mary" than a serious political endeavor.

It would be one thing if he had true momentum and Ohio was a lock such that he was merely polishing the trophy as Obama did in Indiana and North Carolina last time around. But, there is no momentum in the Romney campaign, this is just desperation.
