Agency officials told The Enquirer they are grateful for help, but don’t want people – including political candidates – sending supplies. They would rather have donations of money and blood.

We are not asking for material donations,” said Laura Steinmetz, spokeswoman for the South Jersey Region of the organization. “Financial donations allow us to quickly and efficiently meet the needs of the people in a disaster. It’s far more expensive for us to receive the donated goods, sort them, warehouse them and transport them. So our financial donations are much more cost effective.”
Steinmetz told The Enquirer the Red Cross uses the money to make purchases in or close to communities affected by a disaster, which helps contribute to the area’s financial recovery.
“We’ve always done that with all our disasters,” she said. “It’s the quickest, most efficient way to get what the people need. It’s not that we’re turning down or turning away a donation. We’re just trying to direct it in the most cost effective way.”
The Red Cross website also promotes financial contributions and discourages donations of supplies saying the latter “impedes the valuable resources of money, time and personnel.”
