This.
The Eastern front was a pure hell for the Russians and far more bloody and brutal than anything that happened on the Western front. But it was, as you rightly say, a joint effort. Of course I may be biased, but were it not for the fact that Britain stood alone, totally alone, from the Dunkirk evacuations in May 1940 until the Germans broke the Nazi-Soviet pact in June 1941, and soaked up the air-raids and dissuaded the invasion, there would have been no Western front. had Sea-lion succeeded, the US would have had no base from which to lead any invasion.
Everything worked together and it's pretty insulting to the memories of every person who made a sacrifice in that struggle to suggest that one part of the effort was the crucial one. They all were. I've completely stopped reacting to those "If it weren't for the US you'd all be speaking German" insults. They're too ignorant and intentionally insulting to give head space to.
Back to the topic, no one in the US should pay any attention whatsoever to who foreigners want to win. It signifies nothing except who comes across better via the media. We don't live with the consequences of the POTUS's domestic policies and frankly, I don't ever see much contrast between the foreign policies of US presidents whatever party they belong to. That most foreigners prefer Obama really only tells you that the mainstream of global political sympathies lie somewhere slightly to the left of the US mainstream, but I guess y'all knew that already, didn't you?
Absolutely great post well put.
