Why not just use a mod that they're not suck buddies with and be able to claim they won the debate fair and square?

I agree. The administration should have disclosed this fact, but I don't see it being a big deal.
 
I don't blame Obama/Biden but I certainly blame the journalist and her company. Judges have recused themselves from cases for less connection or perceived conflict of interest. Her husband working in the Obama administration should have been another clue.

According to Wikipedia, Julius Genachowski, the man in Obama's administration, is married to a woman named Rachel Goslins (also part of the Obama administration). So he's not even married to Martha Raddatz NOW.

As for Martha:

After the national security beat, Raddatz become the network's chief White House correspondent for the last term of George W. Bush administration.
