Our politicians are so arrogant and detached that stupidity is mostly what emanates from them. How much smarter would it have been to appeal to Johnson supporters by pointing out any similarities and then asking for the votes. Instead, he basically calls us "stupid" and somehow thinks this will draw support. Maybe it will.

It's all like this now. Lies, threats and falsehoods. Very little actual useful thought process. I would think this crap would offend Americans but it seems that they embrace this.

2 days ago, I started a thread that had no lies, attacks and insults in it. It was intended to be a thoughtful analysis of alternative tax systems. Because I asked that it not just be another round of the usual partisan insults, nobody took any interest at all. While DP is a microcosm of the political spectrum, the utter lack of interest in intellectual discussion may explain why things have become as low as they have and why we have no respect for each other.

If I had posted a thread called "Obama is an idiot" or "Romney eats babies", we'd have 14 pages of insults. And you wonder why nothing much ever changes in America.

BTW, I watched a video of Johnson watching the debate. He had nothing to say unless taxes were mentioned and then he shouted "get rid of the taxes". I was pretty disappointed. This year, I may just not vote at all since my local GOP succeeded in removing the "none of the above" option that Nevadans have cherished for decades.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.:(

I could add more regarding people's misplaced priorities, but that's a bit off-topic and better suited for a thread of its own. Suffice it to say that I understand where you're coming from regarding lack of attention on meaningful subjects where deeper thought is required.

Or he assumes there is a deep pool of people who say that they will vote for an independent or third party candidate but are held back by fear of 'wasting' their vote on a closely contested election and by reinforcing that fear he hopes to bring them into the polling both on election day. I think that is likely.

I understand that. What bothered me was the strategy of the "appeal". The scare them and sell them approach instead of the involve them and embrace them.

If Romney backs away from his tax cut promise, Mr. Johnson will look a whole lot more attractive on election day.

Romney can't make good on his promise. Mathematically, without cutting defense, Medicare or Social Security and cutting taxes, he has to wipe out essentially every single tax credit and deduction. And even then it's questionable if we can actually balance the budget after cutting the small portion of the budget left to zero. Romney's math leaves the biggest spending programs in tact, actually INCREASES one and slices revenue significantly before eliminating deductions. As a licensed CPA, I don't think it's even possible to do this mathematically much less politically. Essentially he has to get all of the GOP to turn their backs on their donors. I don't see that ever happening. Romney is a terrible politician who isn't even liked in his own party. To get them to favor Romney over their future campaigns? Never going to happen.
