Romney's newest platform: Lyme disease

Apparently Romney isn't just pandering to those concerned about Lyme disease...he's pandering to a very specific person concerned about it: Some crank doctor who subscribes to the false theory that there is such a thing as "chronic Lyme disease" that can't be treated with antibiotics and which resembles clinical depression.

This just keeps getting weirder. However, I'm going to give him a pass and assume that some random staffer is responsible for this and not Mitt Romney himself. I can't imagine that Mitt Romney himself lies awake at night thinking about the science behind Lyme disease.

What about Senators Blumenthal and Gillibrand holding hearings in an attempt to get the federal government to finance research and treatment of lyme disease? Are they weird too? Or are they just compassionate, concerned liberals?

I dunno, were they trying to get the government to fund this phony "chronic Lyme disease" thing? If so, then yes, they're weird too. Or at least they have some ****ty staffers who didn't bother to investigate the science behind it.

It's not just a simple nuisance and even early treatment doesn't change the fact that it's always going to be with you (and it really blossoms when you get older). It's a huge deal out here in the Western states. Almost everyone in the elder part of my family (being outdoors people) suffers from it. Sure, it's not hanta virus, but you could equate it with genital herpes (no cure).

I had never heard that before. Now I am going to eventually die from tick herpes I just know it.

Lyme was more of a nuisance. Hantavirus will kill you.
Lyme disease will kill you too.
It is hard to recognize the initial symptoms as they're often mild. But eventually, if allowed to progress, the disease can be quite debilitating.
Lyme disease: Symptoms - MayoClinic.com
Neurological problems. Weeks, months or even years after you were infected, you may experience inflammation of the membranes surrounding your brain (meningitis), temporary paralysis of one side of your face (Bell's palsy), numbness or weakness in your limbs, and impaired muscle movement.

Lyme disease: Complications - MayoClinic.com
Left untreated, Lyme disease can cause:

  • Chronic joint inflammation (Lyme arthritis), particularly of the knee
  • Neurological symptoms, such as facial palsy and neuropathy
  • Cognitive defects, such as impaired memory
  • Heart rhythm irregularities

The mild onset means that the number of cases may be under represented.

Yeah, but it will take a lot longer than Hantavirus. You can die in the field from Hanta before you can get help. Lyme you have time to make it back to civilization, get some drugs and be on your way.

In today's world, Lyme is more of a nuisance then anything else. Hantavirus is scary ****. In terms of threat level, Hantavirus blows lyme disease out of the water. Hemorrhagic fever is not something to be trifled with.

a girl I sort of knew from sports showed up at the US nationals one day (super hot-Oklahoma City in the height of teh summer heat) dressed like something out of the Kentucky derby. big broad hat, a long sleeved blouse and a white cotton skirt that was a few inches off the ground. the other kids were wearing shorts, t shirts or tennis skirts, Turns out this girl was from Connecticut (Lyme is a area in CT where the disease was identified) and she had lyme's disease and the antibiotic protocol made her sensitive to the sun. It took her about 6 months to get rid of the disease.

Hnatavirus is nasty-people got it who were in areas where infected rodent droppings were common and apparently you can contract it through breathing rat crap
